Emma's heart racing, she hesitated for a moment before responding to Jack's text. "Hey, I'm sorry I've been busy with school and work. I'll call you soon."
Ryan, sensing Emma's unease, gently released her hand. "Hey, is everything okay?" he asked, his eyes filled with concern.
Emma forced a smile, trying to brush off the awkwardness. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just need to take care of some stuff."
As they parted ways, Emma couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt and anxiety. She knew she had to confront her feelings and make a decision, but she was scared of hurting Jack and uncertain about her future with Ryan.
The next day, Emma met up with her best friend, Olivia, at the local coffee shop. Olivia, sensing something was off, pressed Emma for details.
"What's going on, Em? You've been acting weird lately," Olivia said, her eyes narrowing with concern.
Emma sighed, knowing she couldn't keep her secret hidden forever. "I met someone," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Olivia's eyes widened in surprise. "Who is it?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
Emma hesitated, unsure if she should reveal Ryan's identity. "Just someone I met through work," she said, trying to downplay the situation.
Olivia raised an eyebrow, sensing that Emma was hiding something. "Em, you can trust me. What's going on?" she asked, her voice filled with empathy.
Emma took a deep breath, knowing she had to confide in someone. "I think I might have feelings for him, Liv. But I'm scared of hurting Jack."
Olivia's expression softened, and she reached out to take Emma's hand. "We'll figure this out together, okay?" she said, offering a reassuring smile.
As they hugged, Emma felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She knew she still had a long way to go, but with Olivia by her side, she felt more confident in facing her uncertain future.
Meanwhile, Jack was growing increasingly suspicious of Emma's behavior. He noticed that she had been distant and preoccupied, and he couldn't shake off the feeling that something was wrong.
Determined to get to the bottom of things, Jack decided to pay Emma a surprise visit. Little did he know, his arrival would set off a chain of events that would change everything.
