Chapter 2: Truth Behind the Blindness
(Seraphina's POV)
“You did all of this for Elara.” Dr. Finch stressed.
I froze.
Elara, the true daughter of the Beta and the Vance Family.
She was switched with me at birth by an omega nanny, my own mother, who served for Vance Family many years ago, and grew up in an orphanage with Damien.
She was found by the Vance couple and brought back, mating with Marcus, my previous fiancé.
“Three years ago, Elara's eyes were degenerating. She needed a transplant. After Elara hit Seraphina with her car, you helped her take Seraphina's unique ocular healing power through that ritual."
"For three years, you've deceived Seraphina." Dr. Finch's voice cracked. "You asked me to tell her that her blindness couldn't be cured. Even when donor eyes became available, you refused to let her regain her sight, worrying that she would find out that it was Elara who took her eyes away."
“I can’t let Elara take any risks. I have promised to protect Elara forever, even if she's not my mate.” Damien said coldly.
I felt dizzy. Everything was collapsing around me.
It was Elara who hit me three years ago.
The perpetrator, who couldn’t be the tracked by the whole pack, was Elara.
The ritual that cost Damien millions of dollars was actually to remove my eyes and transplant them to Elara.
I couldn’t believe that. I hoped I was having a bad dream.
But I knew I wasn’t. I finally knew why I couldn’t heal myself even with my exceptional healing power.
My unique ocular healing power was stolen by Elara, with the help of Damien.
“You should protect Seraphina and your pup too!” Dr. Finch shouted, “ I cannot help you to deceive Seraphina any more. I should consider the pup.”
"I've compensated Seraphina by marking her," Damien also rose his tone. “I’ve give her everything, love, care, wealth, everything a she-wolf wants. What she lost is just sight. Isn’t that enough?”
My blood turned to ice. Compensation. He said marking me was a compensation, a compensation for stealing my power and giving it to another she-wolf.
"Think about your condition," Dr. Finch pleaded. "Your unique physical state makes breeding nearly impossible. Seraphina's pregnancy is a miracle. Would you risk your pup for Elara?"
Damien's expression must have shown brief struggle, but his voice remained resolute. "I'll care for Seraphina her entire life if she stays blind. Just ensure the pup's safety."
The cane slipped from my numb fingers, clattering against the floor.
My chest felt like it was caving in, each breath a struggle against the crushing weight of betrayal.
"Who is outside?" Damien's sharp voice cut through my anguish.
The sound of a door handle turning.
I scrambled to pick up my cane, my hands shaking so violently I could barely grasp it. Somehow I made it back to the ward, throwing myself onto the bed just as footsteps approached.
I forced my breathing to slow, my body to relax. When the door opened, I kept my eyes closed, feigning sleep.
His familiar scent enveloped me as he approached. Long fingers brushed my cheek, gently moving hair away from my face. The same tender touch I had cherished for three years.
Now it felt like ice. Like daggers piercing straight through my heart.
Every breath was agony. The man I loved, the man I had given everything to, had orchestrated my blindness. Had stolen my power. Had lied to me every single day for three years.
All his meticulous care for me was to make me completely blind, so that I would never knew what he and Elara did to me.
All for another she-wolf.
How foolish I was to think that he and Elara were just good friends.
His footsteps retreated. The door closed softly.
Only then did I allow the tears to fall. I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood, stifling the sobs that threatened to tear from my throat.
My cherished love was nothing but a meticulously planned deception. My salvation had been a cruel joke. The mate bond I had treasured was just another chain, keeping me blind and helpless while he protected his true love.
The pain was unbearable. Worse than losing my sight. Worse than Marcus's rejection. This was the complete destruction of everything I had believed in.
About half an hour later, I forced myself to leave the ward. One hand against the wall for support, the other gripping my cane. My enhanced senses, honed by three years of darkness, detected his familiar scent before I heard his voice.
He was a few meters away, speaking quietly into his phone. "Handle it discreetly. I don't want any complications."
When he saw me, he ended the call immediately and walked toward me. The same graceful stride I remembered from when I could still see. Noble. Elegant. Everything an Alpha should be.
"Seraphina." His voice was warm, concerned. He took my hand in his larger one, and I felt the calluses from his training.
"Why are you out of bed? Your hands are so cold. Did Martha not dress you warmly enough?"
The tenderness in his voice made me want to scream.
I pulled my hand away immediately. His brow furrowed - I could sense his confusion even without seeing his expression.
"Are you upset about something?"
Before I could respond, his arms came around me from behind. His masculine scent surrounded me, the same scent that had once meant safety and love. Now it felt suffocating.
"Who made my Luna angry?" His voice was playful, indulgent. "Tell me and I'll deal with them."
A bitter laugh almost escaped me. The person who had made me angry was holding me right now.
I trembled in his arms but forced myself to compose. Turning in his embrace, I looked up at where I knew his face would be.
"Jenna mentioned I'm pregnant." I kept my voice light, teasing. "I suppose all those late nights finally paid off. I think we couldn’t make love any more. What if we hurt the pup?"
His face went serious immediately. "Our pup will be safe and long-lived. I'll protect it from any harm."
"I didn't know about the pregnancy," he said, his voice softer. "I'm sorry if I was too rough. Are you feeling alright?"
Still playing the devoted mate. Still maintaining the facade that kept me loving him, kept me from disrupting Elara's perfect life.
A bitter taste filled my throat, but I forced a smile. "Damien, do you think we'll ever sever our mate bond?"
His entire body went rigid. The arms around me tightened almost painfully.
"What did you say?" His voice was sharp, dangerous.
I kept smiling, tilting my head up. "I just wondered if we might end up like other mated pairs whose relationships sour over time."
"Seraphina Blackwood." His grip on my waist became almost bruising. "I will never let you leave me."
"You and our pup are the most important beings in my life now," he continued, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. "I love you more than anything."
The words hit like silver daggers. He could say he loved me while keeping me blind for another she-wolf's sake.
"I know," I whispered, leaning into his touch. "I love you too."
But in my heart, I knew the truth. I didn't want him anymore. Not at all.
Before I left, I had something important to do. Those who had hurt me would pay the price.
Every single one of them.
The next day, after breakfast, I made my way to the garden.
I pulled out my phone and dialed my best friend Chloe's number.
"I need your help," I said quietly, turning my ears around to make sure I was alone. "Can you book me a flight to the Haven Isles? Half a month from now."
