Chapter 4

I stayed kneeling in front of Lila’s grave. I didn’t move. Boots crushed through the snow, drawing closer step by step. “Sera, you don’t have the right to refuse.” His Alpha command came down like a blade. Every warrior on the slope lowered their head at once. The back of my neck went numb. Obedience was carved into the blood and bone of every Omega. I dug my nails into my palm and used the pain to pull myself up from the snow. “I do.” I looked at him. “Kieran, answer one question.” “Three years ago, on the night the Rogues attacked, did you see with your own eyes who cut the rope?” He frowned. “Nadia said it was you.” “I asked whether you saw it. With. Your. Own. Eyes.” Beta Garrett cut in. “Still making excuses after three years? You think Nadia would lie about her own legs?” “I’m not asking her.” I stared at Kieran. “I’m asking you.” His lips moved, but no sound came out. “You didn’t.” I answered for him. “You heard one sentence from her, and you spent three years judging me for it.” “Then what exactly did you investigate back then?” “The disability report she submitted to the pack,” he said, his voice darkening. “Permanent paralysis in both legs caused by trauma from the fall.” “That was the report she submitted. It wasn’t the original medical record from Silvermoon Hospital.” “Kieran, do you dare send someone to the hospital right now and pull the original files?” His eyes narrowed. “Are you accusing Nadia of forging evidence?” “I’m telling you what really happened that night.” “When the avalanche came down, Nadia cut the securing rope around my waist to lighten the weight and save herself.” “I was swept more than a dozen yards away by the snow, but I crawled back to save her.” “The secondary rope was tangled around her left leg. If I hadn’t cut it, the whole leg would have been mangled beyond saving. I cut that rope, then dragged her out of the snow.” “Her legs didn’t fail because of me. They failed because she was buried in the snow too long, and treatment was delayed.” “I didn’t hurt her.” “She cut my rope. I saved her. And then she turned around and blamed me.” “When I pulled her out of the snow that night, she was clutching my wrist and screaming for help.” “And the moment she turned around, she told everyone I was the one who cut the rope.” A wave of sharp, quiet gasps rippled through the crowd. Nadia’s wheelchair stopped behind her maid. Her face had gone white as paper. “You’re lying…” Her voice trembled. “Kieran, how can you believe her over me?” Kieran slowly turned his head. “Nadia. What really happened to your legs?” “I…” “How long were you buried in the snow?” “I passed out… I don’t remember…” “You passed out.” He asked each word slowly. “Then how did you know Sera cut the rope?” Nadia’s mouth opened. Not a single word came out. Kieran’s fists clenched hard enough for his knuckles to c***k. The Alpha pressure around him turned chaotic. Even Beta Garrett instinctively stepped half a pace back. Snow lashed across every face. No one spoke. Then someone muttered under their breath, “Back then… I don’t think anyone actually saw it.” The wolves who had wagered their silver mines quietly looked away. “Who was the first person to reach the bottom of the cliff three years ago?” Kieran asked, turning back to me. “Ethan. The healer from Silvermoon Town’s Lone Wolf Refuge.” “Three years ago, he tried to bring the original medical records to you.” I looked at him. “Your men stopped him outside the camp gates.” His pupils contracted sharply. He turned and left. Garrett and Theron followed. The maid hurriedly pushed Nadia’s wheelchair down the slope after them. I knelt again in front of the grave. “Lila, look,” I whispered. “Someone finally listened to me.” “Ash.” “Yeah.” Her voice was soft as a sigh. “I miss her so much.” “So do I. She wanted us to live well.” “I don’t know if I can keep going.” “Wait a little longer,” Ash said. “Wait until the truth settles.” “And then?” “Then wherever you want to go, I’ll go with you.” “Somewhere without a Blood Moon.” “Okay.” I leaned against Lila’s grave and closed my eyes. Little by little, the snowstorm eased. Only later did I learn that, on that very night, Kieran locked himself inside the archive room of Silvermoon Hospital and read through the files page by page until dawn.
