Silence.
Complete silence.
Even the air in the tunnel looked uncomfortable.
I stared at the Alpha King.
Then at Kael.
Then back at the Alpha King.
“…I’m sorry WHAT?”
Kael’s expression turned deadly.
“You talk too much.”
The Alpha King smirked. “And you hide too much.”
Bro these men needed couples counseling immediately.
I stepped away from Kael slowly.
“Somebody explain before I start biting people.”
Kael’s eyes flashed silver.
“You’re overwhelmed.”
“WOW REALLY?”
The silver glow beneath my skin flickered harder.
Pain slammed through my chest again.
I gasped sharply.
Kael moved instantly.
But the second he touched me—
the pain got WORSE.
Like fire ripping through my veins.
I cried out.
Kael froze in horror and pulled away immediately.

The Alpha King watched silently.
“Told you.”
Kael looked ready to commit several crimes.
“You think I don’t know that?”
“Clearly you don’t,” the King replied coldly. “Your bond is consuming her.”
I pressed against the tunnel wall trying to breathe normally.
This was insane.

“So let me summarize,” I said weakly. “I’m apparently some magical wolf nuke with abandonment issues, Kael is accidentally killing me with soulmate energy, and murder grandpa over here knew the entire time?”
The Alpha King blinked slowly.
“Murder… grandpa?”
Selena actually snorted.
Kael looked like he wanted to laugh but physically restrained himself.
Small victory.
The Alpha King sighed deeply like civilization had disappointed him personally.
“I am not old.”
Sir you looked older than history textbooks.
Suddenly another wave of power exploded through me.
The tunnel lights shattered again.
Silver energy burst from my body—

Everyone got thrown backward.
Kael hit the wall hard but got up instantly.
The Alpha King barely moved.

Voices echoed louder inside my head now.

BLOOD.
WAR.
Nah because absolutely not.

Kael rushed toward me again but stopped himself before touching me.
That hesitation hurt way more than expected.
“Ava,” he said carefully, “look at me.”
I forced my eyes upward.
And froze.
His expression looked terrified.
Not for himself.
For me.
That hit differently.
The Alpha King folded his arms.
“She needs separation immediately.”
Kael’s voice turned icy.
“No.”
“If the bond keeps growing, she dies.”
“No.”

The King stepped closer.
“For once in your life, stop thinking selfishly.”
Kael snapped.
Silver power exploded from him violently.
The tunnel cracked.
Growls echoed unnaturally deep from his chest.
“You don’t get to speak about selfishness,” Kael snarled.
Oh this had HISTORY history.
The Alpha King’s eyes darkened.
“I sacrificed everything for this kingdom.”
“And destroyed your own mate doing it.”
Silence.
Dead silence.
The King went still.
Selena looked away immediately.
Oops.
LORE BOMB DETECTED.
The Alpha King spoke quietly now.
“You know nothing about her.”
Kael laughed bitterly.
“I know enough.”

Suddenly realization smacked me in the face.
The woman in the portrait.
The silver-eyed woman.
Oh my God.
“That was your mate,” I whispered to the King.
His expression changed instantly.
Pain.
Ancient painful pain.
And suddenly…
I understood something terrifying.
“She was like me.”
Nobody answered.

My stomach dropped straight to hell.
“The prophecy girl before me.”
The Alpha King closed his eyes briefly.
“Yes.”
Kael looked furious that I figured it out.
“Why didn’t anyone TELL me this??”
“Because history repeats itself,” the King said softly. “And Kael refuses to see it.”
Kael stepped protectively in front of me again.
“I won’t let her die.”
The King’s gaze sharpened.
“You said the same thing about your mother.”
Silence.
Kael froze completely.
Oh.
OH NO.
That hit critical damage.
Everything clicked together instantly.
The portrait.
The hatred.
The fear.
The obsession.
Kael’s mother was the previous prophecy wolf.
And she died.
My chest tightened painfully.
Suddenly I understood why Kael looked at me like I was both salvation and destruction.

I was history repeating itself.
And maybe the worst part?

A loud crack echoed through the tunnel ceiling.
Everyone looked up.
The stone above us split apart slowly.
