Chapter 4 — Nah Bro Wanted ME Specifically

803 Words
“They came for YOU.” My brain stopped functioning. Actually blue-screened. Windows error sound. Everything. I stared at Selena while explosions shook the mansion around us. “What do you mean they came for me?!” She grabbed my arm tightly. “No time. We have to leave before Kael finds out.” Excuse me? FINDS OUT?? “What exactly is going on?” I demanded. Selena looked terrified. Not normal scared. Not “oops I forgot my homework” scared. This was “the government knows my location” scared. Another loud crash echoed through the mansion. Somewhere downstairs, wolves were screaming. Selena flinched. “He lied to you about why he bought you.” My heartbeat sped up. “What are you talking about?” Before she could answer— BOOM. The hallway doors exploded open. Dust filled the air. Guards rushed past covered in blood. One of them shouted, “They’re inside the east wing!” INSIDE?? Nah because absolutely not. I was NOT dying in chapter four. Selena yanked me toward a hidden staircase behind a curtain. “Move!” We ran downstairs into a narrow stone tunnel lit by dim lanterns. The walls were cold. Ancient symbols covered the ceiling. My anxiety levels reached DLC content. “Why does this mansion have secret tunnels?” I gasped. “Every Alpha house does.” “THAT’S NOT A NORMAL SENTENCE.” We kept running. I could still hear distant growls above us. Then— A deep howl echoed through the tunnel itself. Close. Very close. Selena froze instantly. My soul left my body. “What was that?” Her face turned pale. “They found us.” Girl WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY— A massive rogue wolf suddenly dropped from the darkness ahead. Seven feet tall. Black fur. Glowing red eyes. Teeth straight out of nightmare fuel. I screamed so loud my ancestors probably heard it. The rogue snarled and lunged— —but before it could touch me— something invisible slammed it into the wall. CRACK. Bones shattered instantly. The wolf collapsed whimpering. Silence. My breathing turned uneven. Then a familiar voice echoed behind us. “You disobeyed me.” Oh no. OH NO. Selena looked horrified. Slowly… I turned around. Alpha Kael stood at the tunnel entrance. Covered in blood. Not his blood. Blood. His black shirt torn open. Gray eyes glowing unnaturally bright. And girl— this man looked absolutely feral. Actually insane. Like if violence became a person and hit the gym. Kael’s gaze locked onto Selena first. Deadly. “You took her.” Selena stepped protectively in front of me. “She deserves the truth.” “The truth,” Kael said quietly, “will get her killed.” Okay now EVERYONE needed therapy. Another rogue suddenly charged from the shadows behind Kael. I opened my mouth to warn him— Too late. Kael moved faster than my eyes could track. One second the rogue existed. The next second— he ripped its head clean off. WITH HIS BARE HANDS. I— BRO??? Blood splattered across the tunnel walls. The rogue’s body dropped heavily to the floor. And Kael? He slowly looked back at me. Completely calm. Like he didn’t just unlock demon mode. My legs almost gave up. “You’re scared of me now,” he said softly. Honestly? YES. Absolutely yes. Normal people don’t do Mortal Kombat fatalities in real life. But weirdly… beneath the fear… my chest tightened differently. Heat. Dangerous heat. No. No no no. I refused to be attracted to this terrifying murder man. Kael walked toward me slowly. Selena immediately stepped back. Interesting. Even she feared him. “You shouldn’t have left the hall,” Kael murmured. “You should’ve mentioned the rogue assassination squad earlier!” His jaw tightened. “They’re after your bloodline.” Silence. My heartbeat stopped. “My WHAT?” Kael stared directly into my eyes. “You’re not an ordinary wolf, Ava.” The tunnel suddenly felt too small. Too cold. Too real. Selena looked away guiltily. I pointed between them aggressively. “No because both of you need to start explaining RIGHT NOW before I pass away emotionally.” Kael reached toward me slowly. This time… I didn’t move away. His fingers brushed my cheek carefully. Way too gently for a man capable of decapitation. “There’s a reason your wolf never awakened,” he whispered. My stomach dropped. “And there’s a reason every Alpha fears what you could become.” Outside the tunnel— another terrifying howl echoed through the night. But this one was different. Stronger. Older. Even Kael went still. The color drained from Selena’s face. Then Kael said the one sentence that completely ruined my remaining sanity. “The Alpha King found you.”
