The Alpha King smiled at me.
And every survival instinct in my body started screaming.
Run.
RUN RIGHT NOW.
Unfortunately my legs had stopped functioning approximately ten emotional breakdowns ago.
Kael stepped fully in front of me.
Protective mode activated instantly.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said coldly.
The Alpha King chuckled softly.
“You stole something that belongs to the crown.”
Excuse me??
I pointed at myself. “HELLO? I’m literally standing here.”
Neither Alpha acknowledged me.
Men.
The Alpha King walked forward slowly, black boots crunching over broken stone.
The tunnel itself seemed afraid of him.
Silver eyes locked onto mine.
And girl—
the pressure coming off this man was INSANE.
Like standing near a natural disaster with perfect posture.
“You look just like her,” he murmured.
Kael’s entire body went rigid.
Oh.
LORE.
Interesting.
“Don’t say another word,” Kael warned.
The Alpha King smirked.
“I see.” His gaze flickered toward me again. “You haven’t told her.”
“Told me WHAT?” I snapped.
Nobody answered.
I was actually going to lose my mind.
Kael grabbed my wrist carefully.
“We’re leaving.”
The Alpha King’s expression darkened instantly.
“You would challenge me over a girl?”
Kael’s eyes glowed brighter.
“She’s my mate.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Then the Alpha King laughed.
Not normal laughter.
This was “ancient villain discovering new entertainment” laughter.
“A mate?” he repeated slowly. “Fascinating.”
Something about the way he said it made my stomach twist.
Like he knew something we didn’t.
Suddenly his gaze sharpened on me.
“Come here.”
The command slammed into me physically.
My knees almost buckled.
WHAT THE HELL??
Alpha command.
The pressure forced against my mind like invisible chains.
Selena gasped behind us.
Even Kael stiffened.
But the terrifying part?
A tiny piece of me almost obeyed.
Nah because absolutely not.
I dug my nails into my palms and forced myself upright.
“No.”
The word echoed through the tunnel.
And everything stopped.
The Alpha King blinked.
Actually blinked.
Like nobody had ever denied him before.
Oops.
His expression slowly changed.
Not anger.
Interest.
Dangerous interest.
“Well now,” he murmured. “That confirms it.”
Confirms WHAT???
Kael suddenly pulled me behind him completely.
“You’re not touching her.”
The Alpha King sighed dramatically.
“You always were possessive, Kael.”
Okay pause.
WHY DID THEY SOUND DIVORCED??
Then the Alpha King smiled again.
“You know she’ll die if the bond fully awakens.”
My heart stopped.
Kael went still.
The tunnel temperature dropped instantly.
“What?” I whispered.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Finally Kael spoke quietly.
“He’s lying.”
But the Alpha King tilted his head mockingly.
“Am I?”
Fear crawled down my spine.
I looked at Kael desperately.
“Kael.”
His jaw clenched.
And that silence?
WORST THING EVER.
“Bro,” I whispered shakily, “why are you being quiet?”
The Alpha King answered for him.
“Because your power is unstable.” His silver eyes locked onto mine. “And when the Blood Moon fully awakens inside you…”
He paused.
“…your body will begin tearing itself apart.”
Excuse me WHAT???
I took a step back.
“No no no absolutely not. Reject. Delete storyline.”
Kael turned toward me instantly.
“Ava, listen to me carefully—”
“You knew?!”
Pain flashed across his face.
Oh.
OH THAT HURT HIM.
Good.
Maybe.
I didn’t even know anymore.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I whispered.
“Because I’m trying to save you.”
The Alpha King laughed softly.
“Save her?” He looked genuinely amused. “You’re the reason she’s dying faster.”
Silence.
Kael’s breathing became uneven.
That was answer enough.
My chest tightened painfully.
“No because WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??”
The Alpha King stepped closer.
“Every moment she stays bonded to you, her power destabilizes further.”
My vision blurred slightly.
The silver light beneath my skin flickered again.
Pain ripped through my chest.
I gasped.
Kael caught me instantly before I collapsed.
Strong arms.
Warm scent.
Safe.
And somehow that made everything worse.
Because even now…
my stupid heart still trusted him.
Kael held me tightly against him.
“I’ll fix this,” he whispered fiercely.
The Alpha King watched us quietly.
Then his expression darkened.
“You still don’t understand.”
Kael slowly looked up.
And for the first time—
the Alpha King sounded genuinely serious.
“If she awakens completely…”
His gaze shifted toward me.
“…she won’t become your mate, Kael.”
The tunnel fell silent.
Then the Alpha King spoke the sentence that destroyed everyone’s remaining sanity.
“She’ll become your Alpha.”
