Chapter 2

695 Words
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a message from Sienna herself. Sienna: Hey, Emily, are you okay right now? Jonathan brought me back and insisted on cooking me dinner before leaving. He probably won't pick you up until late. There are snakes and wolves up there—please stay safe! Right after that, she sent over several photos. In the pictures, Jonathan was shirtless, bustling around a kitchen, and someone had smudged a few streaks of cream across his face. This was the same noble rich boy who'd never once lifted a finger to cook for me. Now here he was, grinning away as he worked, not a single trace of reluctance on his face. My best friend noticed my face drop. She craned her neck to peek at the screen, and immediately exploded into curses. "What the actual hell? Is there no end to this girl's audacity?" Without a second thought, Celine snatched my phone right out of my hand and called Sienna back. The second the call connected, Sienna purred into the line, faking all sweet concern. "Emily, Jonathan and I are having dinner now.  He'll come get you later..." Before she could even finish her sentence, a furious roar cut her off. "What are you putting on that innocent act for, you two-faced manipulator? I've never seen a homewrecker bold enough to taunt a girlfriend right in her face before. I've never seen anything like this, honestly!"  My best friend came out swinging so hard, Sienna hadn't made a peep for ages. But before long, Jonathan's ice-cold voice cut through my friend's rage, "Emily, you insulted others and then sent your friend to do it too? "I was actually planning to drive back up the mountain tonight to pick you up. But clearly, you haven't learned anything. If you keep acting like this, I'm going to have to seriously think about whether we should even be together anymore." When his friends had spread nasty lies about me, he never once sounded this worked up. This wasn't even close to his attitude back then. All the anger I'd bottled up this whole time spilled out, and I said, calm as anything, "Don't bother thinking about it. I've already decided. We're done." The second the words left my mouth, Jonathan froze mid-sentence, completely caught off guard. "Emily, how dare you—" Before he could get another word out, Sienna jumped in to cut him off. "Jonathan, look how worked up you are! Emily's just talking out of anger to get a rise out of you! I've seen every trick in the book. This is just that old 'playing hard to get' garbage. She just wants you to run after her and comfort her. "You're rich as hell, hot as hell. There's no way she'd actually let you walk away." When Jonathan stayed silent, Sienna let out a put-upon sigh and said resignedly, "I have nothing more to say. We just… we should probably hang out less from now on, anyway. That way she won't get any silly ideas in her head. "It's just that she's so damn sensitive. She gets all territorial and throws a fit just because you have a female friend around. If you let her walk all over you like this, the guys are never gonna let you live it down." That line hit exactly where it hurt, and Jonathan's voice went ice-cold, "Fine. You're the one who wanted this breakup. Don't come crawling back to me begging to get back together later!" The second the call connected fully, Sienna's smug voice drifted faintly through the receiver, "Don't you worry, trust my experience. In three days max, she'll be sobbing and begging you to forgive her!" My best friend let out a string of sharp, icy sneers. "Begging for forgiveness? More like laying flowers on your damn graves, you pair of backstabbing mutts!" I watched her snap and said flatly, "Don't worry. I'm not taking him back. Only dogs go back to their vomit." Without a single word of hesitation, I pulled up my phone right in front of her and blocked every single one of Jonathan's contacts.
