Chapter 4

Heat pricked at the corners of my eyes. All the time and effort I'd poured into this relationship was worth nothing. Every bit of the genuine love I'd given was worth nothing. A gold digger? Jonathan's family's whole net worth isn't even bigger than the monthly allowance my dad gives me. I'd planned to tell him my real family background when we met his parents this year. But looking at things now, keeping it a secret was the best thing I ever did. It let me see his true face before it was too late. When he saw me frozen in place, the manager snorted dismissively through his nose. "The deputy general manager said you're to go see him as soon as you arrive. He's got something to tell you. It's about your termination, I bet. Learn your lesson this time, little girl. Keep yourself respectable from now on!" As I walked out, I heard their unmasked jeers drifting after me. "Thank god she's finally leaving! Being in the same room with that kind of person makes my skin crawl." "I told you guys she had a thing for me. None of you believed me! That gold-digging manipulator flirts with every guy she sees. Getting fired is exactly what she deserves!" I walked straight into Vice President Victor Hayes' office under the weight of all sorts of sharp, curious, judgmental stares from the crowd. The door clicked shut behind me, and Victor Hayes immediately explained with a guilty look. "I heard what happened to you. Those people are completely out of line! Sienna has always had a vicious mouth! She's already driven more than one promising young girl out of this company. "If you hadn't come to inspect, I'd have kicked her out ages ago. Now that you're in charge, do whatever you see fit."   I nodded, a small smile forming at the corner of my mouth. In that case, I'd start with the PR Department! But when we reached the entrance, we ran straight into Jonathan. My heart plummeted the second I spotted the small cake box in his hand. Jonathan hated sweet food, so there was no question who that cake was for. When he saw me, he took two steps toward me without thinking, then stopped dead in his tracks. His face hardened like ice. "So you finally decided to come find me? Where'd that quick trigger to block me go, huh?" A flash of contempt crossed his face. "Sienna was right after all. You only cared about my family's money. Why would you ever let go that easily?" Right in the middle of his sentence, Sienna walked out of the PR office. She took the cake from Jonathan's hand, all cozy and affectionate, and deliberately raised her voice, so everyone could hear. "I only mentioned it once. I can't believe you actually went and bought it! You had to wait three hours in line at that viral bakery, didn't you!" Only after that did she act like she'd just spotted me. "Emily, what are you doing here? Want to have a bite with us?" One of the onlooking coworkers clicked his tongue. "Sienna's just too nice for her own good, still giving this person a second chance." I watched the scene unfold and spoke coldly. "This is working hours. And you're all lining up for cake and gossiping?"   Sienna rolled her eyes. "Mr. Hayes is still here. Who do you think you are?" One of the coworkers beside them murmured under their breath, "Why is Mr. Hayes here anyway? The last PR department head just got transferred. He can't be here to announce the new head, right?" Someone immediately piped up, "Sienna's obviously the most competent person in our PR department. The head position was made for her!" A huge smile bloomed across Sienna's face, but she still faked modesty for the crowd. "Mr. Hayes, I don't have much experience yet, I'll have to rely on you for lots of guidance going forward—" She never even got to finish her sentence before Victor Hayes cut her off with a cold, sharp rebuke. "I can't do anything for you. She's the one you should be asking." He stepped back, positioning himself behind me.   The room buzzed with confusion.   I smiled at everyone. "Hello. I'm your new department head, Emily."   Then I turned to Sienna.   "You want my attention? Fine. I'll give you a severance package. You can go collect it from Finance right now."
