The moment we stepped through the enchanted gates of Silver Moon Academy, I knew peace was a myth.
The air shifted, tight, prickly and judgmental, it wasn’t just the whispers, it was the way eyes clung to us and and not just us, it was specifically at me.
Those old hags.
The Council elders were already lined up like a firing squad at the courtyard’s edge, their stares slicing through the soft morning fog. Cloaks swept the ground, ancient symbols glimmering on their collars, and their faces, goddess, their faces were the perfect mix of ‘you’re a threat’ and ‘you’re beneath us’.
My steps faltered slightly, but Kian’s hand at the small of my back grounded me.
“Don’t stop,” he murmured beside me. “Let them look, they won’t dare touch you.”
