3 : The Great Escape & The Chase

Elara’s POV I swallowed my fear, forcing my voice to stay steady. "I’ll be out soon, Greggor." A dark chuckle rumbled from the other side of the door. "Do you think I have time to waste on a useless Omega like you?" His voice was thick with irritation, laced with the same disdain I had endured my entire life. The wooden door rattled as his heavy boots pounded forward. I took a step back, my pulse hammering in my ears. The door swung open, revealing Greggor’s towering frame, his beady eyes scanning the room with a smirk. He expected me to be cowering, begging like I always do. I wasn’t. Something inside me shifted. A fire I had never known before. A rage. A will to survive. Greggor took a step toward me, reaching out to grab me. I moved. Faster than I thought possible, I dodged his grasp, my instincts screaming for me to act. Greggor snarled, his face twisting in irritation. “Enough of this, girl, follow me calmly or I'll disfigure your pretty face.” His threat would have made me cower and obey him before but... For the first time in my life, I felt fearless. His patience snapped. He lunged at me. I twisted away, my mind already searching for a way out. The door was blocked. The window was my only escape. But it was barred shut. I didn’t have time to think. I had to move but I'll probably break my bones in the process "Try, Elara," my wolf’s voice whispered. "You are stronger than you think." I ran. Full force. And I jumped. My body collided with the iron bars. Instead of holding firm and breaking some of my bones...they bent. A loud snap echoed through the room. The metal crumbled. The glass shattered. I didn’t stop to process it. I threw myself through the broken window, cutting through the night air, crashing onto the cold ground below. The impact rattled through my bones, but I forced myself up. I had no time. Then...the alarm rang. A piercing howl filled the air, followed by the frantic sound of boots pounding against stone. Fuck. Greggor must have mind linked them about my escape. Suddenly shouts erupted. "She’s escaping!" I turned my head and saw them...enforcers flooding the yard, their eyes locking onto me with pure fury. "Run!" My wolf’s voice roared in my head. I didn’t hesitate. I tore through the open yard, my bare feet slamming against the cold earth. The forest loomed ahead. My only chance. I ran faster, ignoring the sharp sting of rocks and broken twigs slicing into my feet. Behind me, the sound of pursuit grew louder. Snarling. Shifting. They were gaining. Branches snapped. Heavy bodies rushed through the undergrowth. Wolves. I didn’t stop. I pushed harder. But soon...I was cornered. The enforcers surrounded me. Blocking every path. Their dark snarls filled the silence. I was outnumbered. Outmatched. And for the first time, despite the fire in my veins... I was scared. The air was thick with the scent of wet soil, pine, and blood. My blood. My lungs burned as I gasped for breath, my body trembling from exhaustion. The enforcers surrounded me in a tight, suffocating circle, their snarls vibrating through the night. Their eyes gleamed with savage hunger, their claws extended, waiting to rip me apart. I was trapped. A growl rumbled deep in the chest of one of the wolves. He lowered his head, muscles bunching. And then...he lunged. His powerful form hurtled through the air, claws extended, teeth flashing... I twisted to the side at the last possible second, his claws barely missing me as I stumbled backward. But there were too many of them. Another wolf moved in, closing the distance fast. I couldn’t fight them all. I couldn’t win. I was going to die. Goddess! Why was this happening to me? "Relax, Elara, history won't repeat itself, not as long as we're together." The voice inside my head was calm, powerful. "Trust me, Elara. Let me take over. We will never go back to that hell." A shudder ran through my body. My vision blurred as I yielded immediately to her request. Then...fire exploded through my veins. Pain unlike anything I had ever felt ripped through me. My bones snapped and stretched, my muscles tore apart and reformed. I screamed. The wolves halted, watching in stunned horror as my body began to change. I fell forward onto my hands as my fingers elongated into claws. My spine curved, twisting, shifting. The world tilted, cracked. And then... The pain stopped. I lifted my head. The wolves that had once hunted me now trembled before me. Because I was no longer prey to them. A massive black wolf stood in my place, its silver eyes burning with something ancient and powerful. I could feel her. My wolf. She bared her teeth, her deep snarl rolling through the trees like a thunderstorm. The enforcers staggered back. Fear. For the first time...they were afraid of me. A low growl rumbled in my throat as I stepped forward, ready to give my all and attack them. But then...a shadow moved. The wind shifted, carrying something foreign, powerful. A woman emerged from the darkness, her silver eyes gleaming under the moonlight. She was calm, almost bored, as she stepped into the clearing and looked at me, the power that radiated off her was strange and extremely powerful. Who was she? "Stay put, Crescent Wolf. I’ve got this." She ordered in a calm voice. I didn’t know why, but I obeyed. She didn’t raise her hand. She didn’t lift a single finger. She simply whispered. A single, soft word. The effect was instant. The enforcers froze, their bodies locking in place as if invisible chains had snapped around their limbs. Their expressions twisted in horror. Then...they ran. Not just fled...they scrambled, tripping over themselves in blind panic, racing back to the pack. Within moments, the forest was silent again. Who exactly was she and how did she manage to achieve that? I staggered backward, panting as exhaustion claws its way all over me. My wolf slowly retreated, and my body shifted back to human, leaving me shaking, exposed, vulnerable. I turned to the woman, my hands clenched into fists, my stance defensive. "Who are you?" My voice was hoarse, raw. "What do you want?" She didn’t answer. She simply watched me, her expression unreadable. Then, finally, she turned. "Follow me," she said. "You need rest." I hesitated, every instinct screaming not to trust her. But I had nowhere else to go and if I kept wandering around in this dangerous area, things would not end well for me. So without a better choice, I followed her into the dark praying to the goddess that I should not fall into a bigger mess.
