Chapter 2: Seedlings & Soft Conversations

505 Words
Setting: The Green Thumb Nursery, midweek afternoon. Lila walks over after her bookstore shift ends, canvas sketch bag slung over one shoulder, taking Elias up on his plant offer. Elias kneels beside a row of mint sprigs when she arrives, immediately standing when he spots her. Elias: Lila! I didn’t think you’d stop by so soon, it’s nice to see you. What kind of plants are you hoping to paint today? Lila sets her sketch bag on a wooden bench beside the flower beds. Lila: I wanted small leafy plants with soft, delicate textures—something simple to practice light shading in my watercolors. Elias leads her through rows of ferns, baby pothos and clover seedlings, explaining each plant’s care routine as they walk. Elias: Ferns are perfect for soft brush strokes, their fronds don’t have harsh sharp edges. They grow well indoors too, if you want one to keep at your painting desk. Lila pauses to sketch a fern frond quickly in her book while Elias rambles about his nursery renovations. Lila: Your shop feels so peaceful, it’s easy to see how much care you put into every plant here. It must be rewarding work. Elias’s smile softens, a quiet tiredness under his cheer that Lila notices and wants to ease gently. Elias: It is rewarding, but it’s also exhausting some days. My parents passed the nursery to me last year, and I’ve been fixing up broken greenhouses nonstop since spring. I barely have time for hobbies of my own these days. Lila tilts her head, speaking softly, genuine care in her tone. Lila: That sounds really overwhelming. If you ever need help wrapping customer plant orders on busy Saturdays after I finish my bookstore shift, I’d be happy to come volunteer a few hours—no charge at all. I don’t mind folding paper wrapping or carrying small pots. Elias blinks in surprise, touched by her selfless kindness. Elias: You don’t have to do that for me, Lila, I couldn’t ask you to give up your free time. Lila shrugs lightly, happy just to offer support. Lila: I want to. Spending time here around plants and talking with you feels like a nice break from sorting books all week. It’s no trouble at all. Elias picks out a small potted fern and hands it to her, pressing a tiny packet of wildflower seeds into her palm as well. Elias: At least take these as a thank you for offering to help. These wildflowers bloom pale yellow in summer—they’ll make beautiful painting subjects. Lila clutches the seeds gently, heart light with quiet joy. Lila: They’re perfect, thank you so much Elias. As Lila prepares to leave, Elias waves her off from the greenhouse doorway. Elias: Stop by anytime you need more plants, okay? And if you do come help wrap orders Saturday, I’ll save you a jar of my homemade mint honey tea. Lila walks back to the bookstore with a spring in her step, already looking forward to their next meeting.
