Setting: Bookstore break room, evening closing shift. Lila sits at the small break table, painting the fern Elias gave her in watercolor. Mia microwaves two mugs of chamomile tea and sets one down beside her.
Mia: How was your trip to the nursery earlier? You left with a huge grin on your face this afternoon.
Lila holds up her half-finished fern painting, warm pride in her voice.
Lila: It was wonderful. Elias showed me all his new seedlings, and he gave me this fern to take home. I even offered to volunteer wrapping plant orders for him on weekends.
Mia sips her tea, eyes crinkling softly—she never pushes Lila to confess her crush, only listens without judgment.
Mia: That’s such a sweet way to connect with him, honestly. A lot of people with one-sided crushes fixate on “winning” the person’s heart, but you just enjoy caring about him quietly. Do you ever wish he’d see you romantically?
Lila pauses, swirling soft green paint across her paper, honest and calm with her answer.
Lila: Sometimes a tiny little part of me wonders what it’d be like, but I don’t feel sad about it when I think it over. I love getting to know him, hearing about his nursery struggles, bringing him small little joys like reserved books or free volunteer help. Even if he only sees me as a friend, being someone he can rely on makes me happy enough. I don’t need anything bigger than that.
Mia reaches over to pat her hand lightly.
Mia: You have such a beautiful heart for loving people this gently. I’ve seen crushes turn bitter and angry before, but yours is just pure, warm care. I hope you never lose that soft outlook.
Lila smiles, adding pale yellow wildflower accents to her painting, referencing the seed packet Elias gifted her.
Lila: I don’t think I ever will. Loving him quietly makes me a kinder person, honestly. I pay more attention to small nice details about everyone now, not just him. It’s made me grow, even if nothing romantic ever comes of it.
