Chapter 6: Rainy Evening Book Drop-Off

325 Words
Setting: Elias’s nursery front porch, pouring autumn rain. Lila walks over after bookstore closing, holding a wrapped gardening poetry book she reserved for him, raincoat hood pulled over her head. Elias hears her footsteps through the rain and swings open the front greenhouse door immediately, gesturing her inside out of the downpour. Elias: Come in quick before you soak through your coat! I didn’t expect you to walk over in this terrible rainstorm. Lila steps inside the warm greenhouse, shaking rain droplets off her hood, and holds out the wrapped book toward him. Lila: I remembered you mentioned loving gardening poetry last weekend, so I picked this new release aside for you at the shop. I didn’t want to wait until Saturday to hand it over to you. Elias unwraps the paper wrapping slowly, eyes lighting up when he sees the book cover. Elias: This is the exact collection I’ve been wanting to buy for months—thank you so much, Lila, you pay attention to every tiny thing I say, don’t you? Lila laughs softly, wiping dampness from her sleeves. Lila: It’s easy to remember small things when I enjoy listening to you talk about the nursery. Your stories about the plants are always interesting to hear. Elias brews two mugs of warm cinnamon tea to fight off the rain chill, handing one to her as they stand beside a row of blooming lavender bushes. Elias: The rain’s going to keep pouring for hours—would you like to stay here a little while until it calms down? We can look through this poetry book together if you’d like. Lila agrees happily, and they spend an hour sitting on a wooden bench reading soft plant poems aloud to each other, quiet comfortable conversation filling the warm greenhouse. There’s no romantic spark from Elias’s side, only sincere platonic fondness, and Lila feels completely content just sharing this calm rainy evening with him as a friend.
