CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Forged and Falsified I rushed to the law office listed on the divorce petition. The receptionist looked up. “Mrs. Hart?” “Yes,” I snapped. “Who filed this?” She checked the file. “Your assistant. With your signature.” My stomach twisted. “That’s impossible.” “Do you want to contest it?” Contest it? I wanted to burn it. I left, heart pounding, and called Cole. “I didn’t file anything,” I said. “Neither did I.” “It was Vanessa.” He sighed. “She’s obsessed. I’ll handle it.” But I knew I had to confront her myself. I found her at her upscale condo, smug as ever. “You forged my signature.” She sipped her wine. “I saved you the trouble.” “Why? Because Cole chose me?” “He was mine. Until you came along.” “He was never yours,” I snapped. She stood, her face darkening. “You’ll regret crossing me.” “I already do.” I stormed out. Later that night, back at the penthouse, Cole was waiting with flowers. “I made something,” he said. He played a new video: our real wedding footage. He’d recovered it. The vows. The kiss. The love. “I want to start over,” he said. “A real marriage. No contracts. Just us.” Tears welled in my eyes. “I do.” We kissed like it was our first time all over again. But just as we settled into our fresh start… Cole’s phone rang. His lawyer. “I think you should see this,” he said. A warrant had just been issued—for my arrest.
