Chapter 6

1999 Words
The moonlight filtered through the loft’s windows, casting a silver glow across the room. The soft hum of the city outside was the only sound that broke the silence. Inside, the air between Derek and Ember felt thick with unspoken words, a charge that had been building for weeks. Ever since that first kiss, the distance between them had shrunk—emotionally and physically. Ember could feel it in the way Derek’s eyes lingered on her a little longer when they were alone, in the way his hand would graze hers as they passed by each other, leaving a trail of heat behind. But with every step forward, there was hesitation, as if both of them were afraid of what diving deeper into this would mean. Tonight, however, the space between them seemed even smaller. The loft felt intimate, like it had become their own little world. Ember sat curled on the couch, her legs tucked beneath her as she watched Derek move around the room, cleaning up the remnants of the pack’s earlier meeting. She had grown accustomed to these quiet moments after everyone left—moments when it was just the two of them, when the tension that lingered in the air wasn’t from a looming threat but from something entirely different. “You don’t have to do all of that, you know,” Ember said softly, her voice breaking the stillness. “You could just sit with me.” Derek glanced over his shoulder at her, his lips twitching into a small smile. “I’m almost done,” he said, though his movements slowed as if her words had tugged at him. Ember’s heart raced in anticipation. She had gotten used to Derek’s reserved nature, his cautious approach to everything, but tonight she wanted more. She didn’t just want his presence—she wanted him, fully and completely. As if sensing her thoughts, Derek set down the papers he had been organizing and crossed the room to where she sat. The air between them shifted the moment he sat beside her, the closeness sparking an invisible thread that pulled them together. “You’re quiet tonight,” Derek said, his voice low as he settled into the couch next to her. Ember smiled softly, her gaze shifting from his face to the hands. “I’ve been thinking.” “About?” She hesitated, her pulse quickening as she gathered the courage to speak the truth. “About us,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Derek’s expression softened, his eyes searching hers as if trying to understand the meaning behind her words. “And what did you come up with?” he asked, his voice gentle. Ember took a breath, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the weight of the moment, the importance of what she was about to say. “I don’t want to keep holding back,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. “I don’t want to pretend like this isn’t real—like we don’t feel something more for each other.” The silence that followed was thick with anticipation. Derek’s gaze was intense, his eyes locked on hers as if he was trying to read the truth in her words. For a moment, she wondered if she had gone too far, if she had said too much too soon. But then, slowly, Derek reached out, his hand finding hers where it rested on the couch. “I’ve felt the same,” he said quietly, his voice rough with emotion. “From the moment we met, I knew there was something different about you. Something that pulled me in.” Ember’s heart skipped Days turned into weeks, and the rhythm of Derek and Ember’s lives began to shift around their growing relationship. In the quiet moments between pack duties, they found solace in each other, a reprieve from the constant weight of leadership and the battles they faced. What had once been unspoken now flourished—there was no more hesitation between them, no more pretending that their bond wasn’t real. It was a late afternoon when Ember returned to the loft after a long training session with the pack. Her muscles ached, and the adrenaline of the day still hummed beneath her skin, but her thoughts were only on one thing: Derek. She hadn’t seen him all day, and though they were both capable and independent, she couldn’t deny how much she missed him when they were apart. As she entered the loft, the familiar scent of Derek surrounded her—a mix of pine, leather, and something uniquely his. It was comforting, grounding, and as soon as she spotted him leaning against the counter in the kitchen, she felt a wave of warmth wash over her. Derek glanced up at the sound of the door, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he saw her. He set down the coffee mug in his hand and moved toward her without hesitation. “Rough day?” he asked, his voice low, as his eyes scanned her tired face. Ember sighed, the exhaustion evident in her features as she leaned into his embrace. Derek wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close as her head rested against his chest. “You have no idea,” she murmured, letting herself relax in his arms. For a few moments, they just stood there, the silence between them comfortable and filled with the steady beat of Derek’s heart under her cheek. Ember closed her eyes, letting the tension from the day slip away as Derek held her, his hand gently running up and down her back in soothing strokes. “I missed you,” she whispered, her words muffled against his shirt. Derek’s chest rumbled with a quiet chuckle. “I missed you too,” he admitted, his voice softer than usual, the vulnerability in his tone something he only ever showed her. Ember pulled back slightly, just enough to look up at him, her hands resting on his chest. “How is it that just being around you makes everything better?” she asked, a playful smile on her lips despite her exhaustion. Derek’s gaze softened, his hands resting on her waist as he shrugged. “Maybe because you do the same for me,” he said, his voice quiet but filled with sincerity. There was something about Derek’s honesty that always disarmed Ember. He was a man of few words, but when he opened up like this—when he let his guard down—it made her feel like the most important person in the world. She could see the love in his eyes, even if he hadn’t yet said the words aloud. She smiled up at him, her fingers tracing small patterns on his chest. “We make a pretty good team, don’t we?” Derek’s lips curved into a rare, full smile, one that was reserved just for her. “Yeah, we do,” he agreed, his thumb brushing gently along her jawline. There was something different in the way he touched her tonight—softer, more deliberate. As if he was savoring the moment, taking his time to really feel her presence. Ember’s heart fluttered at the tenderness in his touch, the way his eyes lingered on hers, filled with an emotion that took her breath away. Without a word, Derek leaned down, capturing her lips in a soft, lingering kiss. It wasn’t like the heated kisses they’d shared before—this one was slow, gentle, and filled with quiet affection. Ember melted into him, her arms sliding up around his neck as she returned the kiss, her entire body relaxing in his embrace. When they finally pulled back, Derek rested his forehead against hers, his breath warm against her skin. “I don’t want to let you go,” he murmured, his voice filled with a vulnerability he rarely let slip. “You don’t have to,” Ember whispered, her fingers threading through his hair. “I’m not going anywhere.” Derek let out a soft sigh of relief, his arms tightening around her as if holding her was the only thing keeping him grounded. Ember could feel the weight of his emotions in the way he held her, and it made her heart ache in the best way possible. She knew Derek had been through so much loss, so much pain, and yet here he was, letting her in, trusting her with the parts of himself he usually kept hidden. As they stood there in the quiet of the loft, Ember felt a shift in the air between them—a deepening of their connection that went beyond words. She knew, without a doubt, that Derek was the one for her. She had never felt so understood, so safe, and so loved, even if the words hadn’t been spoken aloud yet. “Come here,” Derek said softly, taking her hand and leading her to the couch. He sat down, pulling her onto his lap as she curled up against him, her head resting on his shoulder. They sat like that for a while, wrapped in each other’s warmth, the loft filled with the soft glow of the setting sun. Derek’s hand idly traced circles on her arm, his other resting on her thigh, grounding her in the moment. “I’ve never had this before,” Derek murmured after a long silence, his voice barely above a whisper. “This… feeling of being at peace.” Ember lifted her head slightly, looking up at him. “With me?” Derek nodded, his gaze distant as if he was searching for the right words. “With you,” he confirmed, his voice rough with emotion. “I’ve spent so long keeping people at a distance—trying to protect them, or protect myself. But with you… I don’t feel like I have to do that. I don’t feel like I have to be alone anymore.” Ember’s heart swelled at his words, a lump forming in her throat as she reached up to cup his face. “You’re not alone,” she whispered, her voice filled with quiet intensity. “Not anymore. I’m here, Derek. I’m always going to be here.” Derek’s eyes met hers, and for a moment, neither of them spoke. The emotion between them was palpable, the weight of what they were building together settling over them like a blanket. This was more than just attraction, more than just the pull of two wolves finding a kindred spirit. This was love—deep and undeniable. Ember leaned up and kissed him again, softly at first, but the kiss quickly deepened as their emotions surged to the surface. Derek’s hands tightened on her waist, pulling her closer as if he couldn’t bear the thought of any distance between them. Ember responded in kind, her fingers sliding into his hair, holding him to her as their kisses grew more urgent, more intense. They didn’t need words to express what they were feeling—everything was communicated in the way their bodies moved together, in the way Derek’s hands traced the curves of her body, in the way Ember’s touch lingered on his skin as if memorizing every inch of him. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the loft in a soft, golden glow, Derek pulled back just enough to look into Ember’s eyes. “I love you,” he whispered, the words raw and filled with meaning. Ember’s breath caught in her throat, her heart swelling with emotion as she smiled up at him. “I love you too,” she whispered back, her voice trembling with the weight of the moment. And in that quiet, golden moment, surrounded by the soft glow of the setting sun, Derek and Ember’s world shifted once again. They had found each other in the chaos, and now they were finally home.
