Katherine's pulse quickened as she trailed behind Kael further into the forest. The trees towered around her, their branches weaving together like colossal fingers. The vibrant energy of the woods surrounded her, stirring a peculiar blend of both peril and allure. "Stay nearby," Kael advised, his words soft as a whisper. "As we venture deeper, the spirits grow more formidable. They can detect your presence." "What do you mean by 'formidable'?" Katherine inquired, a slight tremor of anxiety creeping into her voice. "Are they... threatening?" Kael halted, glancing back at her with his radiant gaze. "Some possess good intentions, yet others are attracted to fear and hopelessness. They flourish on it. You have to learn to tap into your own strength, or you might become a target." Katherine agreed with a nod, her resolve warming within her. "I am determined to find my mother. Nothing will prevent me." "Then we need to start your training," Kael stated, signaling for her to follow him to a softly lit clearing. "The spirits will challenge you, but it is essential that you learn to have faith in yourself." Upon arriving at the clearing, Kael took a step back, allowing Katherine to occupy the center alone. The atmosphere around her shimmered, and the hushed sounds of the forest intensified, swirling about her like a gentle gust. "Shut your eyes," Kael directed. "Sense the forest's energy. Allow it to guide you." Katherine inhaled deeply, pressing her eyelids closed firmly. She sensed a wave of energy, a warm embrace surrounding her as if the quintessence of the woods was blending with her own spirit. "I can sense it," she softly spoke, a smile emerging on her lips. "It's as though... I'm a part of it." "Excellent," Kael responded, his voice resonating in her mind. "Now, let it circulate. Tap into it, and allow your abilities to awaken." Out of nowhere, a deep growl emerged from the shadows. Katherine's eyes flew open, and Kael was instantly beside her, his posture protective. From the gloom, a wraith-like being emerged, its figure shifting and contorting, its eyes gleaming with malice. "Stay back!" Kael yelled, raising his hand. "This is a shadow wraith, attracted to your fear." Katherine felt a wave of trepidation, but she recalled her training. Summoning her determination, she stepped forward. "I'm not scared of you!" she asserted, channeling the energy she had just experienced. The wraith faltered, its form wavering. Kael closely observed her, impressed. "Concentrate, Katherine. You have the strength to drive it away." Drawing from the forest's luminescence, Katherine extended her hands, feeling warmth surge through her fingertips. "You have no power here!" she shouted, her voice resonating with newfound force. Brilliant light erupted from her palms, enveloping the wraith. It screeched, a sound akin to shattering glass, before dissipating into the darkness. The clearing fell silent, and Katherine gasped, adrenaline coursing through her. "You accomplished it," Kael remarked, his tone filled with awe. "You confronted your fear and discovered your strength." "I didn't achieve this by myself," she replied, breathless. "I had you leading me." Kael's demeanor shifted for a fleeting instant, revealing a hint of vulnerability in his face. "You wield more strength than you think. Yet, bear in mind, it is a blessing, not a weapon. It should be used carefully." After defeating the wraith, the forest appeared to calm down, with the murmurs transforming into a soft hum. Katherine experienced a feeling of success, but the gravity of their quest weighed heavily on her thoughts. "Kael," she began, speaking slowly, "what is this sinister entity that has taken my mother? What does it want from her?" Kael's expression became somber. "There are individuals who strive to take advantage of the abilities of others for their own benefit. Your mother has a rare power that can shift the equilibrium of both worlds. This makes her vulnerable." Katherine felt hopelessness. "So, you're saying... they intend to exploit her? To exercise control over her?" "Exactly," Kael affirmed, his tone serious. "Should they prevail, it could result in chaos. We need to locate her before it becomes too late." "Then let's not delay any longer," Katherine insisted, her determination strengthening. "What should we do next?" Kael observed her for a brief moment before agreeing. "We need to reach the Heart of the Woods-the holy grove where the spirits convene. There, we could discover answers, or at the very least, a lead on your mother's location."
