Chapter 5: spirit hunter

The next morning, they made their way to the library, a grand building filled with towering shelves and the musty scent of old parchment. The Keeper of Lore, a stern man with silver hair and a gaze that seemed to see through walls, welcomed them. "What brings you here?" he asked, eyeing them with curiosity. Katherine took a deep breath. "I need to know about my mother. Her past... and the Shadow Lord." The Keeper's expression shifted, a shadow passing over his features. "Very well. But know that the truth may not be what you wish to hear. Follow me." He led them into a dimly lit room filled with scrolls and tomes. As they delved into the records, Katherine's heart raced with a mixture of fear and anticipation. She learned of her mother's early years, her unique powers, and the sacrifices she had made. But there were darker secrets too-whispers of forbidden magic and a pact made in desperation. The more they uncovered, the more Katherine felt the pieces of a haunting puzzle fall into place. Her mother's strength had come at a price, one that now threatened to consume Katherine as well. "What if my mother's power is what the Shadow Lord wants?" Katherine mused aloud, dread pooling in her stomach. "What if it's tied to me now?" Kael placed a reassuring hand on her back. "We'll figure it out together. We have to find a way to break this cycle." As they continued their search, Katherine discovered a prophecy hinting at a reckoning-a battle between light and dark. It spoke of a child born of both realms, destined to face the darkness that had plagued her family for generations. With every revelation, Katherine felt the weight of her legacy pressing down on her. She knew now that the path ahead would be fraught with danger, but she also felt a flicker of hope. She was not just her mother's daughter; she was a warrior in her own right. And she would not rest until she had uncovered the truth, until she had saved her mother and put an end to the Shadow Lord's reign once and for all. "seen what you're looking for?" the Keeper appeared behind and startled them. "we're trying to put pieces and puzzles together" Katherine replied rubbing her aching forehead. The faint illumination from the lanterns created extended silhouettes as the three individuals stood in the passageway, their breath forming mist in the chilly atmosphere. The unexpected arrival of the Keeper had sent a surge of adrenaline through Katherine's chest, akin to the crisp air signaling an impending storm. "Katherine," the Keeper addressed her, his figure relaxing as he scrutinized them. "I've been observing your progress from the edge of the wards. You're not merely pursuing ghosts; you seek the truth." Katherine stood tall, her posture firm. "We require all the truth we can gather. The Shadow Lord will not vanish with mere whispers." The Keeper slightly bowed his head. "If you intend to travel into the forest beyond the distant gate, you need to locate three individuals: a spirit hunter, along with two others who complement each other, much like day contrasts with night. Proceed cautiously into the woods, as they challenge those who enter." A sound of doubt emerged from Katherine, whose light-colored eyes seemed capable of perceiving every anxiety present. "Three individuals to track down a shadow? That sounds more like a ceremony than a strategy." The Keeper's expression softened. "Strategies are often birthed from fear, and fear distorts reality. The woods will require sincerity" With that, the Keeper retreated, and the door closed with a breath that spread like an icy mist. Katherine released a breath, sensing a heaviness settle into her palms, as if the balance of the world had shifted towards a critical choice. "First, we must locate these two," Katherine asserted, her voice more confident than her internal state. "The forest will not pause for us." Katherine and Kael navigated through the village paths, where windows shimmered with golden light and the breeze carried the fragrances of pine and rain. They arrived at a bustling market, where a tall figure leaned against a weathered pillar, his eyes shaded by a broad-brimmed hat. "Which of you seeks the truth?" the man inquired, his voice raspy like brittle sticks. He advanced slightly, revealing a slender build cloaked in a robe adorned with symbols that appeared to shift with the light. "Ah, I'm Finn, and this is my sister Elara," a form emerged from the shadows-a tall woman with hair resembling frost and eyes that mirrored every painful memory. She wore a shawl that whispered like the breeze through tall grass. "Keeper's envoy," she declared with a tone that blended confidence and caution. Katherine cautiously stepped forward. "We're in search of the spirit hunter. The Keeper directed us here." Elara assessed them one by one, as if determining their capacity to handle the truth. "Very well. The Keeper wishes you to understand this: the journey you seek leads through a realm where memories intertwine like woven cloth. Not all threads remain whole. Some are frayed, some are borrowed, and some can be perilous if tugged too forcefully."
