It was fifteen minutes past Aubrey’s curfew. Somehow the clock in his car was off, and they were late. He took her hand as he pulled onto her street and brought it to his mouth, pressing a kiss to her tense knuckles. “It’ll be okay,” he said.
“I just… I want you to know that tonight has been the best night of my life. I’ll never forget it.”
He came to a stop at the stop sign right before her house and cupped her cheek. “Me neither,” he said. “I love you, Aubs.”
“I love you, too.”
Hearing her say that was what he imagined heaven was like, pure untainted serenity. He kissed her, soft and sweet before taking his foot off the brake and heading straight to her driveway.
