The training hall felt warmer that evening. Candles burned low along the walls, casting golden light on the mirrors and weapons. My body ached in a good way from the earlier fight, but the fire in my veins kept pushing me forward. I wanted more. I needed to understand what I was becoming.
John stood in the centre of the room, sleeves rolled up, showing strong forearms. He looked at me with those dark, unreadable eyes.
“Lesson two,” he said quietly. “Control the hunger. The power wants to take over. You must stay in charge.”
He moved like water, circling me slowly. “Attack me. Use both speed and strength. Hold nothing back.”
I breathed deep and let the fire rise. My legs pushed off the floor faster than before. I swung a fist toward his chest.
John dodged easily, appearing behind me in a blur. His hand brushed my waist lightly as he corrected my balance. “Again.”
We danced like that for long minutes. Each time, I got closer. Each time, his touch lingered a second longer — on my arm, my shoulder, the small of my back. It was professional at first, but something else crept in. Something hotter.
My breathing grew heavy. Sweat made my training top stick to my skin. When I lunged again, John caught my wrist and spun me around. Suddenly, my back pressed against his chest. His arm wrapped around my waist to hold me still.
“Feel that?” he murmured near my ear. His voice was low and rough. “The power is rising. But so is something else.”
I froze. His body was warm and solid behind me. I could feel the steady beat of his heart. A strange heat pooled low in my belly. Not just from the training. This was different. Dangerous.
I tried to pull away, but he held me gently for one more second.
“Surprised?” he asked softly. There was a hint of a smile in his voice. “Good. The contract forbids me from taking what you do not offer… but it does not stop the tension.”
He released me and stepped back. His eyes glowed faintly red for a moment, matching the fire I felt inside.
I turned to face him, cheeks burning. “That… that was part of the lesson?”
John’s lips curved. “Part of it. You need to learn to handle distraction. In the real world, enemies will use every weakness. Even desire.”
I swallowed hard. Ben had never made me feel like this — this mix of surprise, heat, and confusion. With Ben, it had been safe love that turned cold. With John, it felt like standing on the edge of a cliff.
We continued training. I focused harder, pushing the strange feelings down. My speed improved. I landed a solid hit on his shoulder once. He laughed low, the sound sending another shiver through me.
“Better,” he said. “Tomorrow we add weapons.”
As the session ended, John handed me a towel. Our fingers brushed. That small touch sent another spark up my arm.
“Rest now,” he told me. “The power will settle overnight. But be careful — dreams may come strong.”
I nodded and left the hall. In my room, I showered quickly. The hot water helped calm my racing heart, but I could still feel the ghost of his arm around my waist. The way his breath had touched my ear.
I lay in bed staring at the ceiling. “What are you doing to me, John?” I whispered to the dark.
My phone lit up on the bedside table. More messages from Ben.
“You think that old man can give you what I gave? He will use you and discard you. Come back before it’s too late.”
Another one: “I’m coming to that mansion tomorrow. We need to talk face to face.”
I deleted them all. The old pain tried to rise, but the new strength pushed it away. Ben’s regret was starting, even if he didn’t know it yet.
Sleep came slowly. When it did, dreams flooded in.
In the dream, John stood close again. His hand tilted my chin up exactly like in the car. But this time, his lips brushed mine — soft at first, then deeper. Heat exploded through me. My hybrid power flared bright crimson. I woke up gasping, body hot and trembling.
The surprise of the kiss in the dream left me shaken.
Morning light came too soon. I dressed in fresh clothes and went down to the dining hall. John was already there, drinking black coffee. He looked up when I entered.
“Sleep well?” he asked, one eyebrow raised slightly.
I felt my face warm. “Not really.”
He set the cup down and stood. “Good. The power is pushing through your mind now too.”
Before I could reply, a loud banging sounded at the front doors of the mansion.
Servants rushed past. One came into the dining hall, face worried.
“Sir, it’s Ben. He demands to see Claudine. He says he won’t leave until he talks to her.”
John’s eyes turned cold. He looked at me. “Your ex-husband grows bold. Do you want to see him?”
I thought for a moment. The old me would have hidden. The new me felt the fire rise.
“Yes,” I said. “But not alone.”
John nodded. A dangerous smile touched his lips. “Then let’s greet him together.”
We walked to the entrance hall. John stood slightly in front of me, protective but not hiding me. The doors opened.
Ben stood there in an expensive coat, face red with anger. His eyes widened when he saw me beside John — dressed well, standing tall, power clear in my posture.
“Claudine,” Ben said sharply. “What the hell is this? Come home now. This game with this… uncle is over.”
I lifted my chin. My voice came out steady and cold. “There is no game, Ben. I signed a contract. I am getting stronger. And I am done being your weak ex-wife.”
Ben stepped forward, but John moved slightly, blocking him with nothing but his presence.
“You framed me,” I continued. “You believed lies and threw me away. Now I am rising. And you will watch.”
Ben’s face twisted. Jealousy flashed in his eyes as he looked at how close I stood to John.
John spoke then, voice calm but deadly. “She is under my protection now. Leave, or you will regret coming here.”
Ben glared at me one last time. “This won’t last. You’ll come crawling back when he breaks you, too.”
He turned and stormed away.
As the doors closed, John turned to me. The tension from training still hung in the air. He stepped closer, eyes intense.
“You handled that well,” he said softly. His hand rose and brushed a strand of hair from my face. The touch was gentle, but it sent heat rushing through me again.
For a moment, his gaze dropped to my lips. The memory of the dream kiss flashed in my mind. My breath caught.
John leaned in just a little, close enough that I could feel his warmth. “Be careful, little queen. The power is not the only thing awakening.”
He pulled back before anything happened, but the surprise and the pull between us left my heart racing.
The contract had only just begun, and already everything was changing faster than I expected.
