THE DOCUMENT

The photograph slipped from Rose's fingers and landed on the carpet. For several seconds, she could hear nothing except the violent pounding of her own heart. Three years. The date printed beneath the photograph was impossible. She hadn't known John then. She hadn't even heard his name. Yet there he was, standing beside her mother with an intimacy that made bile rise in her throat. Where did you get this? She whispered. John didn't answer. I asked you a question. His eyes remained fixed on the photograph. Rose, give it to me. Why? Because you don't know what it means. She laughed bitterly. Then tell me. John took a slow breath. It isn't what you think. That's what you've said all night. Her voice shook. You keep telling me that everything isn't what it looks like, but you haven't given me one reason to believe you. She bent down and picked up the photograph. Were you with my mother before you met me? John's jaw tightened. Yes. The single word struck her like a physical blow. Rose stared at him. You were? Yes. Her fingers trembled around the photograph. And you never told me. There was nothing for you to know. Nothing? Her eyes filled with tears. You were standing beside my mother three years before our first meeting. How is that nothing? John moved closer. Because the circumstances were different. Then explain them! I can't. Rose's chest tightened. You can't, or you won't? He said nothing. She turned away before he could see the tears finally spilling down her cheeks. She hated herself for crying. Hated that after everything, a part of her still wanted him to pull her into his arms and tell her there was a simple explanation. But John didn't touch her. He stood behind her in silence. That silence destroyed the last fragile piece of trust she had left. Rose wiped her cheeks and looked toward his desk. Fine. Her voice became strangely calm. If you don't tell me, I'll find out myself. She walked toward the desk. John's expression changed. Rose, don't. She ignored him. Her fingers moved through the documents scattered across the polished surface. Bank statements. Acquisition contracts. Legal agreements. Everything connected to the Smith empire. Then she saw a folder marked ORIGINAL INVESTMENT AGREEMENT. Her pulse quickened. She opened it. The first page described John's company before it became successful. At the bottom was the name of the original investor. Rose stopped breathing. Rose Sterling. Her own name. What is this? She whispered. John closed his eyes. You weren't supposed to find that. She turned toward him slowly. This is my signature. I know. This money came from my account. Yes. Rose's lips parted. You knew? John nodded. The room seemed to tilt beneath her feet. Memories came rushing back. The savings she had secretly withdrawn. The investment she had made three years ago because John had been desperate to launch his company. She had never told him. She had used a legal intermediary because she didn't want his pride wounded. She had watched from the shadows as his business grew from a tiny operation into a corporate empire. She had believed she was helping the man she loved build his dream. You know I funded you, she whispered. When did you find out? A few months later, we married. Rose stared at him in disbelief. And you never told me. I didn't want your money. It wasn't about the money! She shouted. It was about believing in you! John flinched. Rose slammed the folder onto the desk. I loved you when nobody knew your name. I stood beside you when you had nothing. And you knew I was the reason your company survived, yet you let me believe you built everything alone. I wanted to prove I could become someone without depending on you. So you lied to me. I was protecting my pride. And now? Rose's voice broke. What are you protecting now? John stared at her, unable to answer. Her gaze shifted to the photograph still clutched in her hand. What does my mother have to do with all of this? John's face went pale. Before he could respond, a sharp knock sounded against the door. It opened, and his lawyer stepped inside. Sir, we have a problem. His eyes landed on Rose. Then he placed another document on the desk. Someone has leaked the original investment agreement. Rose looked down. Her blood ran cold. And your wife, the lawyer said, is listed as the legal owner of the controlling shares.
