CHAPTER 1
Marianna inhaled deeply. There was enough to pay her rent for the month and some left over for groceries. She had doubled her shifts all week, saving every penny, and seeing the neat stacks of cash made all the grueling hours worth it.
Suddenly, the door flew open with a loud crash, nearly knocking out the small woman. Marianna squeaked in fear as she gathered the money from the counter, shoving the coins into a small pocket of her apron.
Four huge men shouldered their way into the diner, their boots stomping loudly against the floor. They wore black leather jackets decorated with metallic studs and patches bearing strange logos. Their neck veins were swollen with dark purple tattoos, and silver piercings decorated their chins, making their sinister faces appear even more intimidating.
"Well, well, what do we have here?" the leader of the group sneered as he took in the small room. His piercing brown eyes surveyed the establishment with a calculating gaze. He was a giant of a man, with a jagged scar running from his temple to his cheekbone. "Looks like our little chef has finished her shift."
"We are closed," Marianna said, her voice trembling slightly as she looked up at the men. "The kitchen is off limits."
"Now, now, sweetheart," Another man said, flexing his powerful arm as he cracked his knuckles. He was grinning wildly, revealing rows of yellowed teeth, "isn't that a bit rude of you? We came all the way here, and you're telling me that there's nothing for us to eat?"
"We did not come to eat," the leader said, stepping to the side of the counter. The scarred man's grin widened as he moved closer to her, eyeing the money in her apron. "We came for the cash, hand it over."
"I barely have any money," Marianna whined, stumbling backward. "Please, that money is for my rent. I worked hard for it."
"Did you hear that, boys?" the leader said, turning around, "she barely has any money. It's not even enough for her rent, isn't that sweet?" All four gangsters laughed.
"You see, sweetheart," one of the gangsters sneered, "running this place in Sin City comes at an additional cost. So give us all the money you have."
Marianna pleaded, "Please, you can leave now. There is no need for this."
"It has nothing to do with you," the leader said, stepping closer again. "It's where you built the kitchen," he spat, before kicking a table.
"Everything in this place is your responsibility." One of the gangsters brought a pipe and hit the glass display case, shattering it on the floor. Another gangster grabbed a wooden chair, breaking it across the counter.
"Stop, please!" Marianna cried, trying to reason with the men, but they ignored her.
The leader slowly approached the counter, grabbing Marianna's wrist. The woman gasped in pain, trying to pull her hand back, but the man was too strong.
Marianna screamed in panic as the front door flew open. She assumed it was the gangsters again, but there was no one there. The door creaked open, letting in a stream of cool evening air.
The whole room fell silent as all gangsters turned their heads toward the opening. It was like someone had sucked all the air out of the room. The air now felt thick and constricting, making it difficult for everyone to catch their breath. It grew colder as they all stared at his silhouette against the dark street. A gust of wind blew across the room, raising the hairs on the back of the gangsters' necks.
He looked young, breathtakingly handsome, with a tailored black suit that clung to his athletic frame. His pale skin was flawless, contrasting sharply with his silvery white hair. He had a narrow face with chiseled cheekbones and a straight nose. His dark eyes were deep and fathomless, like two endless pitch black voids.
However, the most remarkable thing about him was the aura that surrounded him. He seemed to emanate a strange, unearthly power. He didn't have to say a word for the gangsters to realize he was the most dangerous man they had ever seen. The air around him was suffused with an oppressive force, like he stood in the upper echelon of Sin City's criminal hierarchy, dispensing life and death as he saw fit.
The gang leader's grip on Marianna's wrist loosened, and the fear of this stranger drained the fight from his men.
"K-Kai..." the gang leader stammered, sweat rolling down his temples
The name rolled off his tongue like ice, and all gangsters froze in place. The sight of the stranger sent a wave of apprehension through their bodies.
It had something to do with the air around him and the strange feeling in his chest. The fear was palpable, contagious, and utterly debilitating. It wrapped around the men's spines, making it hard to breathe.
It was a strange sensation, but it wasn't the only thing that ran through the gangsters' veins. The leader's heart pounded in his chest, and his mind raced. The reason for this was his deepest, most treasured fantasy: to kill Kai, the Mafia King, and live to tell about it. It was a reckless, idiotic dream, but it was his.
"Attack," the leader growled, his voice steady despite his fear. "All of you now."
Kai didn't raise a weapon or say a word. Instead, he let out a slow, deep laugh that reverberated through the room like rolling thunder. It was a sound that sent a violent shudder down the gangsters' spines, freezing them where they stood. The strange energy that emanated from him made the warm air in the diner turn to bone-chilling cold.
"If we take his head tonight, we own this city! Attack him!"
The four gangsters charged at Kai. He sidestepped the first thug, grabbing his arm and twisting it until he heard a satisfying snap.
Before the second gangster could bring his weapon down on him, Kai delivered a palm strike to his stomach, knocking the wind out of him. He dispatched the other two thugs with similarly efficient, brutal movements. It was over in a matter of seconds.
The leader realized they were powerless against Kai. With a wild yell, he pushed Marianna toward the counter. "Get over here, b***h," he growled, raising his crowbar. "I'm going to use you as a human shield."
Marianna screamed in fear, but Kai was faster. He appeared before the gang leader, catching him mid-swing. Kai twisted his arm, wrenching the crowbar out of his hands. With a swift motion, Kai placed the bar against the man's knees, knocking him off balance. The gang leader hit the floor with a resounding thud.
The defeated gangsters scrambled toward the exit, unlocking the door and dragging the unconscious leader with them. They vanished into the night, leaving only the sound of heavy raindrops in their wake.
Marianna stood frozen in place as her breath caught in her throat. She stared at the darkened street, her trembling fingers brushing against her lips. Slowly, she whispered the man's name. "Kai..."
Kai stood in the middle of the ruined dining room, watching the gangsters leave. He gave Marianna a long, steady look before walking up to the counter.
"I will have my people fix the mess," Kai said quietly.
Marianna blinked up at him, her fingers curling around the edge of the counter. "N-No, you don't have to do that. You already saved my life. I can't let you pay for," Her words were cut off as the man turned around as he walked toward the front door.
As the silence settled over the restaurant once more, Marianna traced her lips with her fingertips. "Kai..."
