Chapter Six: No Trace

He had barely glanced at the note, right? And he probably only saw the number, not what was written. The top part was facing him and it was folded. But forget that. He actually took one casual glance at the note and memorized the number already? That was quite a stretch. She had to recite it like five times in her head before she got it right. 555-235-556. And him… he just…? “Afraid your secrets will be exposed now?” He asked, taking in her surprised expression. His voice was low, almost amused. But Kiera didn’t quite catch what he said. All she concluded in her mind was that he was a genius. Yup. He definitely was. So she nodded her head at the thought. A slow, earnest nod. Damian frowned once again. Was she really that afraid of being caught? What secret was she hiding? Or was it something personal and not to be shared? That’s why the letter was delivered to her bag. To make an appointment? Since she forgot to meet someone? He couldn’t quite grasp it. He was a pro at reading people. CEOs had to be. But this woman here was hard to decipher. One second she was glaring at him. The next she was nodding like a lost puppy. Kiera looked at his phone anxiously. Praying that they would find that person. So that she could have a chance to personally interrogate them. Ask why they said such words. Why they thought she needed help. And most of all, how they knew where she was. Was there a tracker planted in her neck? Her butt? Or her bag? The thought made her skin crawl. Damian paused from his work when he saw that she glanced at his phone. He was yet to guess what she was thinking about when he saw her roam her hand over her neck with a kind of panicked expression. Then, her face turned beet red as if she had just thought of something bad. Kiera’s hand dropped to her hips. She was about to pull at the waistband of her pants to check when a thunderous voice snapped her out of her thoughts. “What do you think you're doing?” Damian glared at her in disgust. Looking at her like someone who had escaped a psycho ward. Yh. What was she doing? Had she read too many novels and watched too many dramas to think that a tracker would be hidden in her a*s? Or was it the fact that she was about to take off her pants in this car, almost forgetting her location? Her lack of sleep the night before was really messing with her brain. “Uh… I… I was trying to…” she paused and gulped in embarrassment. He was going to think she was crazy now, right? Damian looked at her flustered expression and narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. Was she nervous? Should he drop it? “No more—” The buzzing of his phone interrupted him. He picked it up and caught sight of Kiera's eager expression. Like a dog waiting for a treat. “Speak.” “Uhm sir, here’s the thing,” Mark’s voice came through, fast and breathless. “The number doesn’t seem to be from around this area. Like, they’re from another state. But their current location, before we could no longer track them, was outside the Stevens family residence. They were there for quite some time. Approximately 30 minutes before Miss Kiera Stevens arrived. I don’t think their original intention was to meet Miss Kiera. It’s more like they were there for the Stevens family, and the note was just a spur-of-the-moment decision. Sir, do you think they are some enemies of the Stevens and want to use Ms. Kiera as a pawn? But it doesn’t seem so. Because how would they think that Miss Kiera would help them when she’s also a part of the family…” “You talk too much.” ‘Beep beep beep’ And the call was disconnected. Damian tossed the phone onto the seat. While what Mark said seemed to make some sense, it didn’t perfectly align with Kiera’s thoughts at the moment. First of all, the number wasn’t from this state, right? She didn’t remember her family having dealings with people from outside New York. While her family could easily be classified as second or third tier in Greenwich society, they didn’t have any rivals from outside the state. So it was unlikely that they were enemies. Second, they stayed in front of the family’s villa without making a move. If they were enemies, they’d have acted. Crushed the Stevens family while they were already down. Third, they were there before she came. So they weren’t there for her. But for the family. And since it wasn’t enemies, it definitely wouldn’t be partners. Partners wouldn’t wait outside the gate for God knows what. This was going against logic in every sense! Fourth, although Damian didn’t check the content of the letter, she was well aware of the words written there: _“Whenever you need help or in trouble, call 555-235-556. I’m not someone out here to harm you, I promise.”_ Those were the exact words. It seemed the person didn’t have ulterior motives against her. Or maybe they had some intel about what the Stevens family was plotting. That was serious insider info. But no matter how she looked at it, none of it made any sense. They wanted to help her. They were not against the family. And they were hovering around the estate like people reminiscing about something. Reminiscing. Did they live there before and just came to check out how things were? Everyone had always been together before. Or… was it… her mom! Only her mom left the family years ago. Only her mom could still locate the family. Definitely with some grudges, but also not having the power to drown the Stevens family. That seemed to be it. Only her mom would have a fraction of a heart to want to genuinely help her if she found herself in any kind of trouble. The thought hit her like warm water. She was soon jolted awake by the voice which seemed to be directed at her. “Don’t let yourself become a pawn in someone else’s game.” He strictly advised, his eyes still on his tablet. She stared at him blankly. Yh. He didn’t have a mind link, so he definitely wouldn’t know what she was thinking about. She could only nod her head in agreement. “Yes. I definitely won’t.” With that, she felt like honey was used to coat her heart. The knowledge that her mom still loved and cared for her made her feel like she was floating on clouds. And this man. Even if he had sounded tough, he actually meant well for her too. Whether it was for his own interests or not, he still advised her to stay safe. Damian looked at her cheerful, relief-filled face and thought that things may not really be what they looked like on the surface. No matter whether her name was cleared now, or not… she was still suspicious. Too many coincidences. Just then his phone ringing tone snapped him out of his thoughts again. He was getting tired of this farce. Seeing the name ‘Mark’ made him fume. “What’s up?” “Sir,” Mark said, and this time his voice was dead serious. “IT traced the leak. It came from a Blackwood IP.” The car went silent. Kiera heard it. Every word. Her head snapped towards him. Eyes full of suspicion. Accusation. Hurt. Was he doing this to bring them down? To acquire the Stevens family and make it part of his? To force her to stay longer? It also had bad effects on him too! A scandal in his own company! “Was it you?” She asked. Her voice was barely a whisper. Damian’s jaw clenched. His gray eyes met hers. Cold. Furious. And for the first time since she met him, she couldn’t read him at all.
