A note from author, Elaine Raco Chase –
One of the reasons I wrote Video Vixen was to highlight the similarities between daytime TV soap operas bringing in the money to support primetime television the same way romance novels brought in money to support other publishing efforts. Well that was 1983 – when soaps were in their heyday.
Today, even as I was updating this book – two of my favorite soaps: Guiding Light and As The World Turns had already disappeared from CBS daytime. Now All My Children and One Life To Live, each having over a four-decade run, are coming to an end – to be replaced by more health programming and talk shows.
I remember coming home from school and turning on All My Children to see what Erica Kane, who was my age, was doing – she certainly had an exciting life. TV Guide calls her "unequivocally the most famous soap opera character in the history of daytime TV!”
Gosh, did I say Erica? I meant Susan Lucci!! But that’s exactly what the soaps wanted...for the viewers to relate to the characters, their lives, their wants and their needs. Then suddenly, primetime displayed series soaps: Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing and Falcon Crest giving us the wonderful characters of J.R. Ewing, Alexis Colby, Abby Cunningham and Angela Channing. All became immensely popular figures that audiences “loved to hate.”
Thus Vixen Mallory was born! And boy, was she fun to write. She’s everything I never was, never dreamed I could be, never dreamed anybody but a celluloid temptation could be. When Video Vixen was published – ‘gifts’ were sent to the publisher for her and ultimately sent on to me. Two stood out – one was from a group of prisoners who wanted a naked photo of Vixen for their cells! And the other was a pair of the sexiest, black lace, red trimmed panties - a gift for Vixen! Whew!
Unfortunately, both daytime and primetime soaps have been fading...luckily Vixen can live on in eBook form along with the printed page. I did do quite a bit of re-writing to make the soap information up-to-date and I launched a TV satellite to put Vixen on cable. I also added in a few more scenes and enhanced the love scenes a bit as well Ahhhh....more fun for me and hopefully for you.
MADD – Mothers Against Drunk Drivers is a fantastic group. Having been a victim of a drunk driver – he got a $175 ticket for driving without a license and under the influence – I got 18 months of rehab, everything twisted or broken but my nose, and permanent eye damage from being hit so violently that despite a seat belt, I went through a windshield. Oh, it was Saturday afternoon at 1 pm....I was stopped for a red light...he was drinking and failed to notice!!!
So don’t drink and drive, call a cab, use a designated driver, watch your teens – the life you save maybe your own!
Enjoy!
