CHAPTER 4| I Am Alone

*ALEXANDER* After a long while, I felt Esme was eventually too exhausted and fell asleep in my arms. I hugged Esme gently while caressing her long hair. I was still immersed in the amazing and sweet experience that happened just now. After quite a while, I suddenly thought of something. When did her hair become straight? She seemed to have curly hair before. But I cast my doubts away as maybe she changed her hairstyle. Yet the thoughts wouldn’t stop coming. ‘What happened to the necklace she always wore? Why didn't she wear that?’ She was so different today. All I wanted to kiss her and do all the intimate things with his sweet bride when before this I only felt that I wanted to do innocent things with her. Was she not Esme? A traitorous thought pierced through my mind, but soon I shook my head slightly and got rid of the idea. I was a blind man now. Who else would marry me except for my childhood sweetheart Esme? Thinking of all these made me feel sad but warm. The night was quiet. Listening to my little bride's breathing against my neck, I felt comforted and gradually fell asleep. BANG! I didn’t know how much time had passed but the sound immediately woke me up. Someone had kicked the door open in the early morning, breaking the tranquility and warmth. I immediately covered Esme with the quilt as I propped myself up, hiding her from the intruder that I could not see. "Congratulations, my dear cousin. I heard your wife was beautiful," it was Jason, another cousin of mine. "Thanks," I answered coldly to his taunt. "You don't have to thank me. It was just a courtesy," I heard footsteps and the sound of a cloth being placed on one of chairs nearby. One of the guards must have taken off his own coat and placed it on the dusty chair so Jason could sit down. "Do you know why I am here though?" Jason asked with a nasty smile on his face. I knew he was up to something but I didn’t know what. "I don't know why. Neither do I care," I said indifferently, "You have always been a foul creature, Jason. We both know that I don't expect much from you." He let out a laugh before he stood up and approached me in a leisurely manner, his footsteps signaling me of his approach. "I'm here to inform you that your beloved grandpa just died a couple of hours ago. He died of a heart attack." Blood was pumping in my ears as I was dumbfounded by his words. “What? What did you say?" "I thought you were only blind. I didn't know you're also deaf. I said the old man had kicked the bucket. No one in this family will protect you anymore, you piece of shit." Jason laughed evilly. I blindly reached out and grasped his collar, I felt my eyes burning red from straining to hold back my agitation, "Impossible." I had used so much strength that I didn’t even realize my knuckles became pale. Jason laughed, forcefully ripping away my grip and said cruelly, "I saw his body in the mortuary. The funeral will be held two days later. Pitifully, you're not qualified to be there." “How did grandpa die? Did you kill him?!” I was so furious and desperate, my teeth clenched as I threw my fist at Jason’s direction, tracking by the sound of his voice. But Jason’s bodyguards rushed to stop me together. After a while of struggling, I was thrown onto the floor with a thud. The next thing I realized was Jason's shoe was on my fingers, grinding them. "How could he die? He couldn't be dead!" I growled. The pain in my heart had already overwhelmed the pain in my fingers. I had lost his parents when I was still young and grandpa was my only family left. Jason bent a little, his voice echoing his cruel intention to me, "The old man died because his precious Alex became blind, turning out to be a failure. Why don't you just kill yourself for breaking his old heart?" I could only grind my teeth in anger and despair at the news. *CRYSTALLINE* I was jolted from my rest by a loud noise, my body still limp and tired from yesterday’s activities. Yet the sight greeted me was not what I was expected, the sight of Alex pinned down by two men in suits on the floor with another unknown guy grinding his shoe on his fingers. I instantly jumped off the bed, my sleeveless white baby doll nightgown on, grateful I had put up something before falling asleep, and try to push the unknown guy away from Alex. The man, a brunette with green eyes similar to the ones harassing Alex before this, let out a whistle as he shamelessly ogled my body, making my skin prickle with goosebumps. "Damn, Alex. You did marry a hot piece of ass. How about being my mistress, little beauty?" I glared at him for the comment, trying to hit his wrist similarly to what I had done last time. However, before I could do anything, the man grabbed my arm, dragged me up until I was standing on my toes and smiled viciously, “Take off your clothes. If you serve me well, I will consider letting go of your loser husband.” “Leave her alone!” I heard Alex growled, my eyes catching the sight of him trying to fight back. However, he was still pinned down by several bodyguards. Seeing that, I immediately hit the man with my other hand, this time successful in my act. “How dare you, b***h!” In retaliation, the man pushed me hard onto the ground, giving the bodyguards an order, “Teach them a lesson.” The bodyguards complied and started to hit and kick Alex. Seeing this, I immediately rushed towards him, wrapping him in my arms but Alex instead grabbed my hands and removed my arms from around him and hugged me tightly in his embrace instead. He had bore almost all the beating and kicking from the bodyguards, protecting me in his arms. At this moment, the man’s phone rang and a few moments later, he hung up and held up his hand, signalling for the men to stop. He said evilly to us as we knelt, “I will leave you and your wife alone if you give me what I want. Think about it, my dear cousin.” He stomped his shiny shoes against the wooden floor as if trying to shake off the dust, "Now, excuse me because I've got the Morgenstern gold to succeed. You two can keep enjoying your cozy creaky bed while rotting in this shithole." I immediately helped Alex up, caressing his hands and checking him for any serious injuries while fixing a furious glare on that douchebag. Just shy of a step out of the room, he turned to the middle-aged maid by the door, "Greta, make sure you ‘take care of’ my cousin and his lovely wife very well. Remember who pays your salary now." "Yes, Mr. Morgenstern," the maid answered with a flattering smile on her face, a complete opposite from what her attitude was when she is serving us. The man then left us with a sense of triumph in his steps. Taking my gaze away from the man, my eyes immediately checked Alex over as the maid, Greta slammed the door shut, pretending that she didn’t see anything. Finding bruises turning green and purple, I immediately reached for the medical kit that I always pack in any bag I had. Silently, I cleaned Alex’s wounds and applied ointment on them, staring heartbrokenly at the wounds he suffered. However, looking up to him, I saw that he just sat there blankly and lifelessly as if his soul had vanished. From the midst of waking up, I had heard what that man had said, and I knew how important Alex’s grandfather was to him. He was Alex’s only living family left that still care for him and also the one who loved him the most. My poor husband.. he must be undergoing so much pain right now. I knew that kind of feeling. I had once lost my mother before this. I couldn’t help but cry silently as I bandaged him. This moment made me wish that I could say something to make him feel better, but I couldn't. So instead I gave Alex a warm hug, trying to convey my thoughts through it. This seems to work as he was finally pulled back from his own thoughts as he said to me sorrowfully, “What am I going to do Esme.. I lost my grandfather. I am all alone now...” He looked so pale and vulnerable, making me hugg him tighter, wishing that I could share my own body warmth and power with him. You still have me. I will always be with you. I will never leave you. I held his hand and pressed my lips against his hand gently and felt his pulse by accident. It was steady and strong. I knew how to heal since I was a child. I had learned everything from my grandparents. Judging from Alex’s pulse, I could tell that his blindness was just temporary. He could still recover if he allow me give him treatments. This made my chest was filled with joy instantly. This was magnificent! I could make Alex see again! My heart was pounding so fast. I wished I could shout the good news in his ear but all I could do was to shake his arm gently, my fingers vibrating in excitement by the discovery. It seems he misunderstood my excitement as he spoke, “I know, I still have you, babe. Thank you...” Alex, I can cure you. I can! I shook his arms again, frustrated that I couldn’t say what I wanted. “Do you have something else to tell me?” I brought his hand against my face and nodded anxiously. Alex frowned for a while, we both were stuck between miscommunication before he asked, ''Do you have a phone?'' I nodded again. Alex felt for the table before grabbing a piece of paper nearby and wrote a phone number on it, ''Could you call this number for me, honey? This man will help us. Just put me on the phone when he picks up.'' I did as he said and put the phone against Alex’s ear. A deep male voice answered the call. “Hello?” ''Hello, Zack, it's me'' Alex’s voice was deep and soothing, clearly whoever this Zack was, he is a trusted friend of sorts. ''Sir?'' I could hear the surprised in the receiver’s call, perhaps it’s because he was hearing from Alex again, ''Where are you? Where did you get the phone?'' ''I'm in the old house at the moment.'' ''Okay… Just wait for me there. I'm on my way!'' Passing the phone back to me, Alex explained to me in a gentle tone, ''This man, Zack used to be my assistant. We can trust him.'' Perhaps only moments passed but the man from the phone call walked in, perhaps already familiar to this house already. He looked young in his mid-20s with a pair of rectangular glasses perched on his nose, black hair sleek back and dark eyes looking at them, he looked to be a man on a mission. That is, until tears began to pool behind his specs when his eyes finally landed on Alex ''Sir, your grandpa passed away…'' “I know, someone else already told me'' grief was heavy in his tone, my hand reached up and caress his arm in support as I could visually see him try to be calm at the moment, ''Just take a seat first.'' Zack sniffed as he grabbed a chair from the corner, grabbing the tissue that I had held out to him. “Thank you,” Zack said only for me to see him stiffened in surprise as he finally looked at me in the face. Oh no! He recognized me! Quickly pressed a finger against my lips and shook my head at his surprise look. I knew he already realized that I was a substitute as this man who was with Alex before surely knew what Esme look like. But I couldn't let Alex know now, hopefully Zack could keep my secret. Alex was sitting on a chair right now. The deep sorrow on his handsome face had gone, instead a calm look was on his handsome face. Zack, my wife has something to tell me. Could you let her write down whatever she wanted to say and read it for me?'' I had prepared a pen and a piece of paper, writing down a couple of sentences and gave the paper to Zack. Zack’s eyes were lit up as he saw the words I wrote, ''Sir! Great news! Mrs. Morgenstern just said she knew how to heal and she could make you see again!'' Alex had frozen in his place on the chair for a second before a wide smile broke his face, hugging me in his arms, planting a small kiss on my cheek. “Sweetheart, you are really a miracle to me.” I will cure you Alex..
