Cindy's POV
Exhausted but content, I boarded the bus that would take me back home from my graduation ceremony. Despite attending the milestone event alone, I surprisingly didn't feel sad. I knew deep down that my mother would have loved to be there, but she couldn't make it due to the Smiths' impending arrival. Rumor had it that they would be back in just two days' time.
Let me properly introduce myself. I'm Cindy Mensah, an eighteen-year-old girl who resides with her mother, or at least that's what I call it. You see, my mother and I live in the servant quarters of the Smith mansion, where we both work as maids.
If you're wondering how we ended up here, two years ago, our lives were quite different. My father was a highly esteemed flight lieutenant in the Ghana Air Force, decorated with numerous honors. However, tragedy struck when he went on a peacekeeping mission and never returned. After a year of desperate searching, he was officially declared deceased. That's when everything took a turn for the worse. My mother, once a stay-at-home mom, had to make drastic decisions as we struggled to pay bills and faced eviction. Fortunately, she was offered a job at the Smith mansion, which came with accommodation. We had no choice but to seize the opportunity, no matter how bittersweet it seemed. Although our circumstances weren't ideal, the fact that we could live together was enough to bring me some solace.
My thoughts were interrupted as the bus conductor announced my stop. I swiftly disembarked and made my way home.
As I entered the house, the air was filled with bustling activity. Servants scurried around, ensuring that everything was in order. I hurried to the quarters and swiftly changed into my maid uniform, prepared to lend a hand.
In the kitchen, I found my mother diligently preparing supper for everyone. "Mum, I'm home," I called out when I spotted her.
"Hey, Cinderella!" my mother exclaimed, her eyes shimmering with pride. "Congratulations! I'm so proud of you, and I know your dad would be too." I couldn't find the words to respond, so I simply smiled through my tears.
Just as we shared a heartfelt moment, Janet, another maid and my best friend, entered the kitchen. "Look who's back from her graduation," she said, beaming. "Congratulations, sis!" Janet enveloped me in a warm embrace. "That's not the only reason I'm here, though. Mr. Smith just called... their flight has been rescheduled, and they will be arriving at noon tomorrow." The news took both my mother and me by surprise. She swiftly assigned me the task of cleaning two rooms for the Smiths' children. We knew they had two kids, but the family was shrouded in secrecy, so we didn't know much about them.
Two hours later...
Fatigued from cleaning and scrubbing the rooms and bathroom, I was utterly drained. I hoped that the Smiths would appreciate the effort I had put in. Descending the stairs, I made a beeline for the kitchen, my stomach growling with hunger. The other staff members had already gathered there, enjoying their meal alongside my mother. She pointed to the plate of food she had set aside for me, and I joined them, eagerly devouring my meal. Mr. Jones, the chief steward, inquired if everything had been taken care of. We all nodded in unison before returning to our meal. Once we had finished, we tidied up the kitchen and retreated to our respective rooms.
Back in my humble bed, I took the time to rearrange and perfect every detail, as I always preferred things orderly. I then headed to the bathroom to freshen up. As I returned to my room, I found my mother already settled in her bed, immersed in her nightly ritual of reading the Bible. I bid her a soft goodnight and climbed into bed, allowing exhaustion to wash over me.
As I lay there in the darkness, my mind filled with thoughts of the Smiths and their impending return. What would they be like? Would they even notice a maid like me? I couldn't help but wonder about their lives of luxury and privilege, so different from my own.
Little did I know that the arrival of the Smiths would set in motion a series of events that would forever change the course of my life. Fate had a way of weaving intricate paths, and soon, my journey would intertwine with that of the eldest Smith son, Brian. The son of privilege and wealth would cross paths with a maid like me, and love would blossom against all odds.
But as the night grew darker and my eyelids grew heavier, I let go of these thoughts, drifting into a deep slumber. Tomorrow would bring a new chapter, and I couldn't wait to discover what the future holds in store for me.
