Chapter 5; The power She Couldn't Hide

553 Words
The forest felt colder than before. Nyra moved beside Ronan, her steps quick but unsteady, her senses overwhelmed by everything happening at once. The sound— That unnatural howl— It echoed again, closer this time. Her chest tightened. “They’re near,” she whispered. “I know,” Ronan replied, his voice lower now, sharper. “Stay behind me.” Nyra almost argued. Almost. But something in his tone stopped her. Not control. Not dominance. Concern. Real. And that confused her more than anything else. They stepped into the clearing— And everything went still. The wolves surrounding the area had formed a loose circle, their bodies tense, their eyes fixed ahead. Waiting. Watching. Nyra followed their gaze— And froze. At first, she didn’t understand what she was looking at. They looked human. But not entirely. Their movements were too precise. Too controlled. Too… calculated. Dark clothing. Strange weapons. Cold eyes. Hunters. Her breath caught. “They’re real…” she whispered. Ronan stepped slightly in front of her. “I told you.” One of the hunters stepped forward. His gaze locked onto Nyra instantly. Not Ronan. Not the wolves. Her. “Target located,” he said. The words sent a chill down her spine. Target. Not person. Not wolf. Something else. Nyra’s fingers curled slightly. “Why me…?” she whispered. No one answered. Because deep down— She already knew. The hunter raised his weapon. It hummed with a strange, unnatural energy. Nyra’s heartbeat spiked. “Ronan—” “Don’t move,” he said sharply. The weapon fired. A pulse of energy shot toward her— Fast. Too fast. Nyra froze. Her body refused to respond. Everything slowed. The air. The sound. Her breath. Then— Something inside her snapped. The world shifted. Her eyes burned. Power surged through her veins—stronger than before, hotter, sharper, impossible to ignore. The energy attack— Stopped. Mid-air. Just inches from her. Silence. Complete. Nyra stared at it. Her breath shaking. “I… did that…?” The hunters didn’t look surprised. They looked— Confirmed. “Subject verified,” the leader said calmly. Nyra’s chest tightened. Subject? Before she could react— The energy pulse shattered. Not outward. Inward. Pulled into her. A violent force rushed through her body. Nyra gasped, her back arching as the power exploded inside her. Pain. Heat. Something tearing through her from the inside. “Nyra!” Ronan’s voice cut through. She dropped to her knees, clutching her chest. “I can’t—” she choked. Her eyes— They glowed again. Brighter than ever. Silver mixed with deep, consuming darkness. The ground beneath her began to crack. The air trembled. The wolves backed away. Even Ronan hesitated. Because this— This wasn’t normal. The hunter stepped forward again. Unafraid. Almost… interested. “Phase two,” he said. Nyra’s head snapped up. Her glowing eyes locked onto his. “What… did you do to me…?” she whispered. The man tilted his head slightly. And smiled. Cold. Calculating. “We didn’t do anything,” he said. A pause. Then— “We just woke it up.” Nyra’s breath stopped. The power inside her roared— And then— Everything went What happens when Nyra loses control… and the thing inside her finally takes over?
