Chapter 7: When the Power Went Silent

532 Words
Silence. Not the peaceful kind. Not the calm kind. This silence felt… wrong. Nyra lay motionless on the cold ground, her body still, her breathing faint. The glow in her eyes had disappeared completely, leaving behind nothing but emptiness. For the first time since everything began— There was no power. No voice. No darkness. Nothing. And somehow— That felt worse. “Nyra…” Ronan’s voice was low, almost unrecognizable. He knelt beside her, his usual confidence gone, replaced by something unfamiliar. Concern. Real concern. He reached out, hesitating for the briefest moment before touching her shoulder. “Hey,” he said more quietly. “Wake up.” No response. His jaw tightened. “This isn’t funny.” Still nothing. A strange tension filled his chest—tight, uncomfortable, unwanted. He didn’t like it. Didn’t understand it. And that made it worse. Behind him, Kael stood frozen. Watching. Waiting. Struggling. “She’s breathing,” Kael said after a moment. Ronan didn’t look back. “I know.” But that didn’t make it better. Because she wasn’t waking up. And something about that— Didn’t feel natural. Inside— Nyra floated. Again. But this time— The darkness was gone. No voice. No power. No presence. Just… emptiness. Her thoughts felt distant. Slow. “What happened…?” she whispered into the void. No answer came. For the first time— She felt truly alone. Outside— The hunters were gone. Vanished as quickly as they had appeared. But they had left something behind. A faint energy lingering in the air. Ronan’s expression darkened as he felt it. “They took something,” he muttered. Kael stepped closer. “What do you mean?” Ronan finally looked at him. “Their field,” he said. “It didn’t just hold her.” Silence. Then— “It suppressed her.” Kael’s chest tightened. “Temporarily?” Ronan didn’t answer immediately. And that silence was enough. Nyra’s fingers twitched. Both Alphas froze. Her breathing shifted— Then— Her eyes slowly opened. But they weren’t glowing. They weren’t powerful. They were… Normal. Confused. Weak. “Where…” she whispered. Ronan leaned closer. “You’re alive.” Nyra blinked slowly, trying to focus. Her body felt heavy. Empty. Wrong. “What… happened?” she asked. Kael stepped forward. “You lost control.” Nyra frowned. “I don’t remember…” Her voice faded. Her hand pressed weakly against her chest. The power— It wasn’t there. Her breath caught. “No…” she whispered. Ronan’s eyes narrowed. “What?” Nyra shook her head slightly. “I can’t feel it…” Silence fell. Heavy. Terrifying. Because for the first time— Nyra wasn’t overwhelmed by power. She was empty of it. Ronan stood slowly. His expression darker than ever. “They’re coming back,” he said. Kael’s gaze sharpened. “For her.” Ronan nodded once. “And next time…” His eyes flicked toward Nyra. “…they won’t leave her behind.” Nyra’s chest tightened. Fear crept in— Cold and unfamiliar. Because now— She wasn’t strong. She wasn’t dangerous. She wasn’t anything. And that terrified her more than the power ever do
