The night was thick with tension as Ana and Alex slipped into a nondescript apartment building, away from the hospital’s chaos. Inside the dimly lit room, Ana tried to make sense of the whirlwind events while Alex paced restlessly.
“We need to figure out our next move,” Alex said, rubbing his temples. “But first, we need to deal with the immediate problem.”
Ana frowned. “And what’s that?”
Alex tossed her a burner phone. “Contact someone who might help us. I have a friend who’s into this kind of mess.”
Ana took the phone, but before she could ask more, Alex’s phone buzzed again. He glanced at the screen and groaned.
“More messages from your wife?” Ana asked, her tone sharp.
“Yeah,” Alex said, his frustration evident. “She’s getting more persistent. She thinks I’m cheating on her.”
Ana raised an eyebrow. “Cheating? That’s quite an accusation.”
Alex’s jaw tightened. “It’s not about what she thinks. It’s about the fact that she’s adding to the chaos. Look, she has her reasons to be paranoid, but this is not the time for personal drama.”
As if on cue, the doorbell rang. Alex’s face went pale. “That’s him,” he said, heading to the door.
When he opened it, a man in his early thirties stepped in, his demeanor casual but his eyes sharp. His name was Marcus, a contact known for dealing with sensitive and often dangerous information.
“Marcus,” Alex greeted. “Glad you could make it.”
Marcus’s gaze flickered to Ana before he spoke. “And this must be the infamous Ana. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Ana gave a curt nod. “I’m the one stuck in the middle of this mess.”
Marcus chuckled. “Sounds about right. So, what’s the situation?”
Alex briefed Marcus on the events, the secret research, and the threats they were facing. Marcus listened intently, occasionally nodding.
When Alex finished, Marcus leaned back, his expression thoughtful. “Alright, I can help with the information. But first, you should know—I’ve got my own issues. My connections are... less than legal.”
Ana looked at Marcus, her curiosity piqued. “And what’s in it for you?”
Marcus’s smirk widened. “Just a favor. I have a personal stake in this. A little bird told me that someone might be trying to use your situation to their advantage. And I’m all about keeping things balanced.”
Before they could delve further into the discussion, Alex’s phone buzzed once more. This time, the message was from his wife, accompanied by a photo of Alex and Ana from the hospital, clearly taken from a distance.
“What the hell?” Alex muttered, staring at the screen.
Ana looked over his shoulder. “She’s spying on us.”
Alex’s face darkened. “Great. Just what we needed—more complications.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow. “Looks like your wife’s not the only one interested in you. This photo’s likely to stir up trouble. People will start asking questions.”
Alex scowled. “Fantastic. Now we’re dealing with a jealous spouse and potential blackmail.”
Ana glanced at Marcus. “What else can you tell us? We need to get ahead of this.”
Marcus’s eyes gleamed with mischief. “Well, I might have heard some rumors about certain influential people being interested in your abilities, Ana. Not everyone has your best interests at heart.”
Alex’s expression hardened. “I need to know everything. Especially if it involves manipulating or controlling Ana.”
Marcus shrugged. “I’ll dig up what I can. But be prepared for some uncomfortable truths. Sometimes, what you don’t know can be as dangerous as what you do.”
As Marcus left, the tension in the room felt palpable. Alex and Ana exchanged uneasy glances. The stakes were higher than ever, and the dangerous web of relationships and secrets was only starting to unravel.
Ana’s gaze fell on Alex. “So, what’s next?”
Alex’s jaw tightened. “We keep moving. But this time, we need to be smarter and more careful. We’re not just dealing with secrets anymore; we’re dealing with people who will do anything to get what they want.”
Ana nodded, her resolve hardening. “Alright. Let’s get to work.”
