Chapter 6 He Was Weird

1228 Words
Mrs. Bright's face turned serious, "Although you have divorced, Laura is still the daughter-in-law I have chosen. Our love for her will not diminish. Anyone who dares to bully her will be against the entire Bright family." Mrs. Bright had always been biased towards Laura. In the past, Laura felt grateful, but at this moment, her heart feels as cold as ice. If all of this was just an illusion, if Mrs. Bright was truly the mastermind behind the destruction of her family, then she had truly been a wicked person over these years. After toasting Mrs. Bright with a few glasses of wine, Laura quietly left and went to the backyard alone. The cold wind brushed against her face, gradually clearing her thoughts. Suddenly, a shadow loomed her. "What kind of potion did you use on my family?" Elliott's deep and magnetic voice rang out, sharp like a blade in the night, filled with suspicion. Laura suddenly snapped back to reality, glaring at Elliott. "I'm telling you, Laura, don't think you can seduce me with a look of innocence. I won't like you, not now, not ever." "That is truly a cause for universal celebration,” Laura sneered, her eyes filled with mockery. She downed the strong liquor in her hand in one gulp, feeling it burn in her mouth before sliding down her throat. "Over these years, I have not only cared for you but also for your parents and grandparents. To be honest, I have a clear conscience and have never done anything to wrong you," she said calmly, stroking the cup. All the affection over these years was useless. Her words were like a resounding slap to Elliott, leaving him speechless. He furrowed his brow, but could not find any words to refute. Over the past three years, he rarely went home, but whenever he did, everything at home was always in order. Even his mother never distracted him with trivial matters. He gradually got used to this pattern, thinking it was Laura's duty to fulfill. "In this marriage, the real wrongdoer is only you. You have an affair, truly indulging in it." Laura stared at him mockingly and got up after speaking. As she turned around, she didn't notice a waiter behind him carrying a tray and unexpectedly ran into her. The wine spilled from the tray and instantly drenched Laura's dress. "I'm sorry," the waiter panicked, bowing his head and apologizing repeatedly. Elliott instinctively pulled Laura towards him, his gaze falling on the clothing soaked with wine on her chest. The fabric clung to her skin, outlining her curves subtly. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down, lips pressed tightly together, as he took off his suit jacket and dominantly draped it over Laura's shoulders. Laura stiffened, and she looked at him, "No need." He was weird. "Put it on." Elliott's strong hand held her shoulders, not giving her a chance to refuse. He was dominating, and she understood it from the beginning. But her displeased expression, in Elliott's eyes, was extremely annoying. Once a meek little cat now transformed into an erupting lion. In just a few days, her rebellion had shocked him countless times. Which one was the real her? Laura coldly snorted, and released his hand. She left without looking back, secretly cursing in her heart, “What bad luck.” She walked into the Bright family's guest room, and opened the wardrobe, where several high-end women's clothing was hanging. She randomly picked one and put it on, fitting perfectly. These clothes were all prepared for her by Mrs, Bright, meant for her convenience when living here, but she had never worn them, as Elliott never returned with her. After changing clothes, she stood in front of the window, watching the bustling crowd below, her eyes deep. If at this moment... Her heart skipped a beat, and she quietly clenched her fist. Without hesitation, she walked out of the guest room. She reached the end of the corridor, stopped in front of a study with a password lock, confirmed that there was no one around, and began to enter the password. She had seen this password accidentally before. Luckily it hadn't been changed. The door opened smoothly with a click, like the whisper of death. Laura's heart suddenly tightened, as if a thin thread was about to break. Her palm trembled slightly from gripping the door handle, and cold sweat quickly seeped out. Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door. This Bright family study was the most secret place in the entire mansion, and they couldn't easily enter. Perhaps here, she could find some clues about her parents' death. She stepped into the study, her gaze immediately locking onto the drawers on the desk. In a panic, she hastened her search, her heart pounding, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead. "These documents..." They were all company files of the Bright Group, and there was no information she wanted. She continued to search the room, feeling frustrated. "There must be something else." She forced herself to calm down and began to search the bookcase. However, the unexpected came suddenly, and she accidentally knocked over a trophy with her elbow. The deafening sound instantly sent chills down her spine, and her heartbeat stopped for a moment. After quickly setting the trophy upright, as she was about to leave, she caught a glimpse of a hidden compartment on the bookshelf in the corner of her eye. She moved closer to take a look, only to find a small mechanism. Could it be... Just as she was about to investigate, the voice of Mrs. Bright suddenly came from the corridor. "I don’t know why Elliott was interested in Molly." The breath of Laura almost stagnated, and time seemed to be frozen in this moment. She quickly turned the dial in the dark compartment, and the bookcase slowly parted to reveal a crack of a hidden door. At the same time, footsteps in the corridor approached, and she could hear the ticking of the keypad being pressed. She clenched her teeth, boldly entered the hidden door, and swiftly closed it. At the same moment, the door to the study was opened. Her body pressed tightly against the hidden door, as if she could hear her heartbeat, pounding like a drum. Outside, the conversation between Mrs. Bright and James Bright continued. “What happened to the parents of Laura... I already owed them, and now we are mistreating their daughter. How can I find peace with myself?” These words felt like a sharp sword piercing Laura's heart, causing her nerves to convulse violently. Then, a single sentence from Mrs. Bright made her desperate, “If I hadn’t done that, they wouldn’t have died at all. I'm sorry for Laura...” Laura was shocked, realizing that it was them who destroyed her family. Without even having time to sort out her thoughts, the footsteps approached the dark door again. Her heart raced to her throat as the outside button began to turn. In the enclosed space, there was no way to escape. She held her breath, feeling frozen in place, unable to move. With a click, the dark door slowly opened, revealing a pair of nude high heels adorned with diamonds stepping in. Her throat went dry, the tension almost suffocating her.
