Chapter TwentyADRIAN WAS WAITING, arms folded in front of him, as Maggie exited the front door of Bella Bella looking very professional carrying a black leather briefcase. She gave a perfunctory smile as he opened the back car door for her.
“Hello.”
“Hi.”
Adrian held the door as she got in. He thought about saying something, then sighed as he moved around the back of the car to get to the driver's side.
The trip was uncomfortably silent, except for the hum of the car as he glided through the morning traffic. Adrian was uncertain of what to say, or if he should say anything, and if he did, would it just make things worse?
Then Maggie blurted, “Oh, um, I have some interesting news. About my job. Guess who's coming to the gala now?”
“Let's see… the Queen of England?”
“How did you know?
