The little-boy with gray eye

1137 Words
Ariana didn't sleep that night. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking about everything that had happened. Lucien's face when she told him about Ethan. The anger in his voice. The hurt buried deep beneath his cold words. And his order. Move into his house, or face him in court. It wasn't really a choice at all. At six in the morning, Ariana gave up on sleep. She made coffee and sat at her small kitchen table, reading through the papers Lucien had given her. The agreement was actually fair, if she was being honest. She would have her own bedroom with a private bathroom. Ethan would have his own room too, decorated however he wanted. They could come and go as they pleased, Ariana could still go to work, Ethan could still go to preschool. But they had to live in Lucien's house for at least six months while they "worked out a permanent arrangement." Six months living with Lucien Black. Six months of seeing him every day. Six months of watching him get to know the son he never knew existed. Ariana's hands shook as she set down the papers. "Mommy?" She looked up. Ethan stood in the doorway in his dinosaur pajamas, rubbing his eyes. His dark curls stuck up in every direction. "Good morning, baby," Ariana said, opening her arms. Ethan climbed into her lap, still warm and sleepy. "Did you have good dreams?" "Uh huh. I dreamed about a big castle." Ethan yawned. "Can we have pancakes?" "Sure, sweetheart." Ariana held him close, breathing in his little-boy smell. "Ethan, I need to talk to you about something important." "Okay." Ethan looked up at her with those big gray eyes. So much like his father's. "Do you remember how you sometimes ask about your daddy?" Ethan nodded slowly. "You said he had to go away before I was born." It was the story Ariana had told him a simple version that a four-year-old could understand. She'd always planned to tell him the truth when he was older. But now... "Well, your daddy didn't really go away," Ariana said gently. "He just... he didn't know about you. I didn't tell him." Ethan's forehead wrinkled. "Why not?" "Because I made a mistake. A big one." Ariana touched his cheek. "But now your daddy knows about you. And he wants to meet you." Ethan's eyes got very wide. "Really? I have a daddy? A real daddy?" "Yes, baby. A real daddy." "What's he like? Is he nice? Will he like me?" The questions came out fast, full of excitement and hope. Ariana's heart hurt. "He'll love you. I promise." "When can I meet him?" "Today," Ariana said. "We're going to see him this morning. But Ethan, there's something else. Your daddy wants us to come live in his house for a while. Would that be okay with you?" "Live in his house?" Ethan bounced a little in her lap. "Like a family?" "Sort of like a family." "Okay!" Ethan threw his arms around her neck. "I want to meet my daddy! Can we go now?" Ariana laughed despite the tears in her eyes. "After breakfast. And after we get dressed. You need to look nice for your daddy." "I'll wear my best shirt! The blue one!" Ethan scrambled down and ran toward his room. Ariana watched him go, her heart breaking and healing at the same time. At least one good thing would come from this mess. Ethan would finally have a father. Even if it meant Ariana had to give up her freedom to make it happen. --- At exactly nine AM, Ariana and Ethan stood in the lobby of Black Industries again. Ethan held her hand tightly. He looked adorable in his blue button-up shirt and little khaki pants, his curls finally tamed with water. But he was nervous now, not bouncing with excitement like before. "Mommy, what if he doesn't like me?" Ethan whispered. "He will like you," Ariana promised. "You're the most amazing kid in the world." Jennifer appeared, just like yesterday. But this time she looked at Ethan with clear curiosity and something else. Recognition, maybe? It was impossible not to see the resemblance between the little boy and his father. "Mr. Black is waiting in his private sitting room," Jennifer said. Her voice was softer than yesterday, gentler. "Follow me, please." The sitting room was on the same floor as Lucien's office, but smaller and more comfortable. There were soft couches, warm lighting, and even some toys in the corner like someone had rushed out to buy them this morning. Lucien stood by the window again. He turned when they entered. And froze. Ariana watched his face as he saw Ethan for the first time. Watched all the color drain away. Watched his gray eyes, the same eyes as his son's go wide with shock. Because there was no denying it now. Ethan looked exactly like Lucien. The resemblance was impossible to miss. "Oh my God," Lucien whispered. "He looks just like me." Ethan pressed closer to Ariana's leg, suddenly shy. Ariana put her hand on his shoulder. "Ethan, this is Lucien Black. Your... your father." "Hi," Ethan said in a small voice. Lucien slowly walked closer. Then, to Ariana's surprise, he knelt down so he was at Ethan's eye level. "Hi, Ethan," Lucien said. His voice was shaking. "I'm very happy to meet you." "Are you really my daddy?" Ethan asked. "Yes." Lucien's eyes were wet. "I really am. Is that... is that okay with you?" Ethan tilted his head, studying Lucien's face. "You have the same eyes as me." "I do." Lucien smiled a real smile, the first Ariana had seen from him in five years. "We have the same eyes. And the same hair. See how curly it is?" "Mommy says my curls are trouble." "They are trouble," Lucien agreed. "Mine never stay flat either." Ethan giggled. Then, before Ariana could stop him, he stepped forward and touched Lucien's face with one small hand. "You look sad," Ethan said. "Are you sad?" Lucien closed his eyes. A single tear rolled down his cheek. "I'm not sad anymore, buddy. Not now that I met you." And then Ethan did something Ariana didn't expect. Something that broke her heart and put it back together all at once. He hugged Lucien. Just wrapped his little arms around his father's neck and held on tight. Lucien made a sound like a sob. His arms came up slowly, carefully, like he was afraid Ethan might break. Then he held his son close, burying his face in those dark curls. "I'm sorry," Lucien whispered. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there." "It's okay," Ethan said. "You're here now." Ariana had to turn away. Her own tears were falling too fast to stop.
