Chapter 10 Theodore, Seth, and Edgar sat astride their horses on a hill overlooking one of their many sugar cane fields that was being burned to make the process of cutting the cane easier. Their overseer, Emmanuel, was with them. They watched as their slaves scurried around the perimeter of the field controlling the burn. A great plume of smoke arose from the burn area as the tops of the stalks and the dry, green leaves were set aflame.
