Theodore had no idea how long he had been asleep but awoke to a strange rattling sound. He opened his eyes and saw a tin meal plate which that had been slipped under his door, jiggling up and down on the floor spilling that which was supposed to be his breakfast. Theodore got to his feet just in time to be thrown to the ground as the entire cell shook, the ground beneath him heaving, dirt and dust from the walls and ceiling falling around him. The shaking soon stopped and, unharmed, Theodore got back to his feet and dusted himself off. He could hear cries from the other prisoners and guards of, “Earthquake, earthquake!” Theodore looked at the window above him. Bright, late-morning sunlight streamed in.
