Chapter 39
''Baby, I need to leave now. I just got a call that my father is having some seizures.'' Reed said, rising to his feet.
There was a frantic look in his eyes which was something Luciana hadn't seen in a long time. Even though he didn't like what his father did at times, he still didn't want him dead because there would always be this connection between father and son.
''Oh my gosh! I wish i could go with you.'' Luciana sighed.
''Don't worry about it love, you've done enough for me. I'll give you a call to tell you how everything went. I love you baby.'' Reed said.
He gave her a deep kiss that did wonders to her head. Luciana didn't want him to leave but he had to. He kissed her again before jumping out of the window. Before she could get to the window and truly know how he came in and went out undetected, he had already disappeared.
''Really strange.'' Luciana murmured.
Now that he had gone, she didn't seem to know what to do with her life. She didn't have any engagements for that day and she knew her best bet was to stay back home and wait for Reed's call.
Luciana couldn't help but feel agitated. She wanted to know if Pablo would survive this episode like he had been doing before. At that moment, Luciana didn't know if she wanted him dead or not. She was tied between the two. On one hand, she wanted him dead so they could have peace and on the other hand, she didn't want him to die because she had a feeling that Reed would be sad.
''Now what?'' she murmured.
She rose up on her feet, pacing the length and breadth of the room as her heart drummed within her chest. There was nothing she could think of now other than Pablo's death occurring.
''What's wrong?'' a voice asked.
Luciana jumped in fright upon hearing that voice. She turned only to discover it was Alessandro who had come in unknown to her.
''Andro.'' Luciana smiled.
''Come, let's go talk in the gardens.'' Alessandro said, walking out of the room.
Luciana had no other option but to follow him. After all, she needed to talk to someone and possibly tell him what she had just heard.
''Here.'' Alessandro said, handing over a small glass of red wine to her.
''Thanks.'' Luciana smiled before taking her seat in one of the garden chairs.
''Now, what is the matter Diabla?'' Alessandro asked.
''I just got news that Pablo is on the brink of death.'' Luciana said.
''Hmm. Is this news confirmed?''
''Yes, it is.''
They remained silent for a while, each with their own thoughts. Luciana was on the outcome of everything if Pablo eventually died.
''Then it's good news.'' Alessandro said, finally.
''I know it's good news but what about the effects it would have on both groups?'' Luciana asked.
''I'm not sure i get you Diabla.'' Alessandro said, taking a sip from his glass.
Luciana then went on to explain how the Fontana's would no doubt hasten the process of taking over the group and strengthening their bond with the outside help. It would no doubt be a suicidal mission if they went through with the plan.
''I still don't see how that is a problem.'' Alessandro said.
''I know but Andro, have you stopped for a second to think about how we aren't really prepared?'' Luciana asked.
Alessandro laughed, a deep belly laugh that frightened Luciana to know end. Suddenly, she didn't seem to know him anymore. He now seemed like a stranger to her which was odd to say the least.
''Sometimes, you behave like the child you truly are.'' Alessandro said.
''Not funny.'' Luciana sighed.
''I never said I was a clown. Anyway, have you forgotten the amount of power you weild?'' Alessandro asked.
''Alessandro, i know i wield a lot of power but sometimes, we have to stop and think on whether what we have would be enough. Alessandro, you fail to realize that this battle that's about to commence is a big one, and a very big one at that.'' Luciana said.
Alessandro remained quiet as he thought about what she had said. He couldn't help but think that she was actually making sense. This was going to be the battle of the century.
''I understand. The only thing i can do now is to get some arms and ammunitions from our reserve, only then can we be ready.'' Alessandro said.
''Then i think that would be enough.'' Luciana smiled.
''It would be.'' Alessandro said, rising to his feet.
He took Luciana's hands before giving it a gentle squeeze. Luciana was touched by this and she couldn't help but give him a big hug.
''Just before your father died, i made him a promise and that promise was to keep you safe no matter what happens and i fully intend to do that.'' Alessandro said.
''Thank you.'' Luciana smiled.
''You don't have to thank me. You are my daughter and there is nothing I wouldn't do for you. So Luciana, I want you to be rest assured that nothing and I mean absolutely nothing would happen to you. Not on my watch.'' Alessandro vowed.
''Now you're making me mushy.'' Luciana laughed.
''Even the strongest of hearts gets mushy at times.'' Alessandro laughed.
Alessandro kissed the top of her head before releasing her. He needed to finish up a report he had started out that morning.
''I'll be in my office if you need me,'' he said.
''Okay.'' Luciana said, sitting back on the chair.
''And Diabla… tell your boyfriend to be careful when next he sneaks into your room. He almost got caught this morning.'' Alessandro winked before disappearing round the bend.
''What the hell!'' Luciana laughed.
She actually knew that nothing could be kept away from him. Alessandro's eyes were all over the place.
Just then, her phone gave a loud beep which indicated she had a call. Immediately, Luciana's heart began pounding because she knew with everything within her that it was Reed calling.
Glancing at the Caller ID, she was quite surprised to see that it was Enzo and not Read whom she was expecting.
''Enzo?'' Luciana said out loud.
She sighed, accepting the call. Enzo wanted trouble and she was ready to give it to him.
''What do you want?'' Luciana asked.
She wasn't in the mood for any bullshitting he might want to do. She was angry and agitated at this point.
''You always answer me with venom in your words. What did i ever do to you?'' Enzo sighed.
Luciana wasn't fooled by this because she knew he was only pretending. He was a green snake under green grass and it was only a fool that could trust him.
''Well, what do you want? I haven't got all day.'' Luciana said.
''Anyway, I'll be coming home this weekend. My tickets are all booked.'' he said.
Luciana scoffed, hardly believing her ears. Last time she checked, this wasn't his home so where on earth did he get that assumption from.
''Who is deceiving you? What home do you have? Last time i checked, we both have different fathers or are you too dumb to realize that?'' Luciana seethed.
She was done playing the good girl. She wanted Enzo to know that she hated him with a passion and there was nothing that could change that.
''Do you know you shouldn't even be the one ruling? You're a woman for christ sake, men are the ones that's supposed to rule the group.'' Enzo said.
''So now that i'm ruling, what do you want to do about it?'' Luciana laughed.
''Take back what's rightfully mine.'' he seethed.
''Be my guest. And just before i go, i want you to know that you have no home here and if you even think about coming here, your corpse would be thrown out.'' Luciana said before cutting the call.
''Idiota.'' she seethed.
She paced about, trying all she could to make her heart calm but it wasn't helping matters. She hated feeling this way because it only gave her a cause to worry. Now, she hadn't heard from Reed and she didn't know what to expect.
''Now I have to worry about Enzo too. Bastard!''
Twenty minutes later, her phone beeped and this time around, it was Reed. Even before she picked up the call, she had a feeling that the inevitable had occurred.
''He's gone.'' Reed simply said.
''I'm sorry.'' Luciana said with a flat tone.
''You don't have to be sorry. It's not your fault.'' Reed sighed.
''I wish i could come over but that's not possible.'' Luciana sighed.
''It's fine. I just need to finish up with some things and I'll be with you at the hotel. I'll call you when i'm leaving.'' Reed said.
''Okay love. I'm with you in the spirit.'' Luciana said before cutting the call.
Now that Pablo of the Fontana's had gone to be with his ancestor's, Luciana knew that the battle was about to begin.
''I better go tell Alessandro the news.''
Luciana made her way towards the study where Alessandro would be and true enough, she met him there.
''He's dead.'' Luciana said.
Alessandro, who had his glasses perched atop his nose, didn't shake upon hearing her words. He expected it and so, it was no surprise for him.
''Wow!'' he said, finally.
Luciana shut the door behind her before walking into the study. At that moment in her life, she didn't even know what to do because everything was looking strange to her. There were times when she knew the direction to follow but now, there were no pointers.
''This doesn't change anything, you hear me? Stick close to Reed and find out everything you can about this war. I trust you Diabla and i know you will deliver.'' Alessandro said.
Luciana nodded before walking out of the room. It was in those moments she was glad she had Alessandro by her side. With him beside her, she drew her strength and could actually forge ahead.
Now that they had a clear picture of what they should do, she was ready to begin.
