Chapter 43

''You didn't call me like you promised.'' Reed said as soon as Luciana picked up the call.

Luciana sighed, staring at nothing in the ceiling. She had completely forgotten to give him a call when she was free and she felt guilty about it. Reed had every right to be angry but she was quite surprised that he wasn't. Instead what she detected in his tone was hurt which was far worse than anger. At least with anger, she could free herself and take all of the blame but with hurt, she just didn't know what to do.

''Sorry Reed, i've had a very tiring and annoying day.'' Luciana sighed.

She wouldn't blame him if he decided to use that against her. After all, she was at fault here and if she were in his shoes, she might have done worse.

''Do you want to talk about it?'' Reed asked.

''There's really nothing to talk about other than Enzo is an annoying asshole who is bent on taking over leadership of my group. I mean, what kind of talk is that? This man is seriously getting on my nerves.'' Luciana seethed.

''What did Alessandros say about it?'' Reed asked.

He knew the older man would never support it but still, he needed to ask just to be sure that everyone was on Luciana's side.

''He hates it and i'm very sure if he had his way, he would kill Enzo on the spot but that's the problem.'' Luciana said.

''What? Killing Enzo?'' Reed asked.

''Not just that. He's family Reed and terminating him isn't something that's going to be very easy. People would begin to suspect and when they do, all hands would be pointed at us.'' Luciana said.

She had thought about it countless times and there was really no other option. Enzo was family and if he was another person entirely, Luciana wouldn't hesitate to finish him off. After all, she had no use for him.

''I see. Luciana, let me ask you a question.'' Reed said.

Luciana didn't really like the tone of his voice but since they were talking about a serious issue, she couldn't blame him for using that tone of voice on her.

''What?''

''If Enzo threatened your life or perhaps he made an attempt to kill you, what would you do?'' Reed asked.

That question had been bugging him at heart ever since she told him about Enzo and he really wanted to know what she would do when faced with that situation.

''I will kill him without a second thought.'' she said, finally.

There were no emotions in her words and Reed knew that was her final answer. There was no going back and he was happy about her boldness.

''That's what I wanted to hear.'' he smiled.

''Wait, did you really think I would wait for him to kill me? You must be a joker.'' Luciana laughed.

Reed joined in laughter and he was quite glad she had eased up a little bit on the tension that was plaguing her mind ever since.

''Thank you. I guess i needed that laugh.'' Luciana smiled.

''Anytime my love. I want you to know I'm always here. You don't have to carry the burden all alone.'' Reed assured her.

Luciana fell silent as she thought about what he had said. Sometimes, she wondered how she deserved him and as she thought about it, she was quite glad she had him and Alessandro at her corner but still she felt bad for going close to him just because of the information she could get from him.

''I hope you're okay too?'' Luciana asked.

''Yes, i am.'' Reed simply said.

He didn't want to bore her with what Valentina had said. As it stood, she had enough already in her plates and telling her about Valentina didn't make any sense to him. He would handle the w***e of a woman in his own way without stressing Luciana said.

''So there's this apartment of mine downtown. I'd like us to be meeting there. I'm really not comfortable with you and I am frequenting each other's house. We have to be very careful how we move.'' Reed said.

Luciana saw sense in what he said. No matter how much they wanted to be careful, they were bound to get caught one of these days. They loved each other too much to be away from themselves for a long time.

''Okay.'' Luciana said, finally.

''I'll text you the address now. Are you okay to be alone tonight? Should i come over?'' Reed asked.

As much as she wanted to feel him close to herself, Luciana realized that it wasn't really necessary. It was far too late into the night and she didn't want to endanger his life. Though he could handle virtually everything that came his way, the sense of reasoning still won.

''No Reed, i'm fine.'' Luciana smiled.

''Okay love. Remember, if you need me, I'm only one call away.'' he chuckled.

''Being Charlie Puth i see…'' Luciana laughed.

''Of course baby, for you everyday.'' Reed laughed.

They talked some more before they ended the call. Talking to him was always very therapeutic and Luciana was glad that she had him in her corner.

She placed her phone at her bedside table, sighing in bliss and in contentment. At that moment, she made a promise within herself to end all of this once and for all.

The last thing on her mind before she drifted off to sleep was her in a wedding gown with Reed who was holding her hands.

The next morning came without any fanfare except a blaring noise that jerked Luciana awake. She groaned, reaching for her phone which was also blaring at that moment.

''What the hell!?'' Luciana groaned.

She rose up from her bed, staggering towards the window to see what the noise was all about. There didn't seem to be any trouble except that her men were running towards the gate in a haphazard motion.

''What the hell?'' Luciana snapped.

She quickly tied her robe before hurrying out of her room and downstairs towards the gates. She wanted to know first hand what was really happening and not some half baked story she was sure her men might give her

''Diabla, sorry about the noise.'' one of the guards said as soon as he saw her.

It wasn't a usual occurrence to see her up so early and they knew it was due to the noise that just occured.

''What the hell is happening?'' Luciana asked with sleep filled eyes.

''A gas flare just exploded just a few meters away and so we're trying to contain the explosion.'' the guard said.

Dread filled Luciana upon hearing what he said. Her mind moved quickly and she wondered what really were the odds. Enzo had only come in the previous day and now, this was happening.

''Where's Alessandro?'' she asked.

''He's with some of the men at the site where the explosion occurred just a few meters away.''

''I hope…''

Luciana couldn't bring herself to finish what she had in mind. Luckily for her, the guard knew exactly what she wanted to ask.

''No Diabla, thankfully nobody was hurt.'' he smiled.

''Okay. I'll be at the gardens. When you get more information, let me know immediately.'' she said.

''Yes ma'am.''

Luciana nodded before walking away towards the gardens. Now, her morning was successfully ruined. There was no way she could go back to sleep after hearing that and she sure as hell wouldn't be happy over this.

''What the hell is happening?'' Luciana murmured.

Everything was odd to her because this had never happened before. Even in her father's time, it had never happened and what baffled her the most was that it happened very close to her house.

A few minutes later, Alessandro walked into the compound. Even from where she sat, she could see him walking in. There was a confused and agitated look on his face and Luciana had a feeling that the situation was far worse than the guards let on.

''Alessandro.'' Luciana said as soon as he was within earshot.

''I'm sure you must have heard that there was an explosion.'' he said as a way of greeting.

''Yes, i heard that but i really do not know the details of it.'' Luciana said.

''It was a gas canister, very small in size.''

''I know what a canister is Alessandro.'' Luciana sighed.

''Right.'' he simply said.

''What I want to know is who was responsible for it. I need a name.'' Luciana said with annoyance in her voice.

The person had successfully spoiled her morning and her mood which was something she hated with a passion.

''Sadly Diabla, there is no name. We didn't get the person behind this but we highly suspect it was just a bunch of kids playing within the estate.''

''And kids would be in possession of this dangerous equipment? I don't think it's possible.'' Luciana said.

She rose up from her seat, pacing about in agitation. There were so many loopholes around this story and she wasn't sure on which one to believe.

''Luciana, you really don't know kids nowadays. They can literally get their hands on anything now.'' Alessandro said.

''But a gas canister? That's illegal you know.''

''I know. Though that's our assumption, we will continue to investigate on it until we have a probable scenario.'' Alessandro said.

''Thank you.'' Luciana sighed.

He nodded before walking away, leaving her to her thoughts. Luciana sat back down, going through the series of thoughts that was taking place in her mind.

''Who could have done this?'' Luciana murmured.

Just then, her phone gave a small beep which indicated she had a call. She was expecting to see Reed's name on the screen but she was quite surprised to see Enzo's.

''What do you want?'' Luciana snapped.

''I'm sure you got my little gift.'' he sneered.

''I thought as much. So you are the one responsible for that.'' Luciana snapped.

''Of course and there's more where that's coming from. This is only the beginning Diabla and whether you like it or not I will take what rightfully belongs to me.'' he said before cutting the call.

Now, Luciana knew he had declared war and she had to do everything within her power to take him down.
