First Revenge

SQUELCH. The disgusting sound and smell instantly wafts around me. I look down and realize that I was so distracted by my escape plot that I’ve stepped directly in a giant pile of horse s**t. What a metaphor for my life. I try to wipe some of it off in the dirt, but it’s no use. It’s all over the hem of my dress and up to the ankle of my shoe. Then, an even worse sound rings in my ears. Snickering. Awful, hateful giggles. A few yards away I see three of the Ladies-in-Waiting, the Queen’s court. They’re staring at me, laughing hysterically. “Oh, Drusilla,” one of them says, “At least now you’ll smell like the dogs you sleep with.” The others erupt in a chorus of giggles. I feel my jaw clenching and my hands forming angry fists at my side. I know I shouldn’t care what they think of me, but lord they piss me off. Then a vengeful smile creeps across my face. I’m going to kill two birds with one stone. I reach down and pick up a handful of the smelly dung, swallowing back the vomit that’s forming in the back of my throat. It will be worth it. I stalk toward the snickering girls, holding out the handful of s**t, and their eyes grow wide when they realize what I’m doing. The guard behind me grabs my arm. “What do you think you’re doing?” he mutters. Without even thinking, I turn around a smash the entire handful right in his face. He screams in horror, running to try to find the nearest well  to clean himself up. I grab another clump of dung and continue storming over to the girls, my heart racing and my cheeks burning from the hateful smile that’s stretched from ear-to-ear on my face. They watch in horror as I approach, and soon enough they start to scatter like frightened little rats. The last one is looking at me over her shoulder as she runs away, and runs directly into Ladon’s chest. He holds her shoulders in place, a mischievous twinkle glistens in his eye. “I don’t think your conversation with Drusilla was over yet,” he says. He turns her around, holding her in place as I approach. “Eat s**t,” I mutter, smearing the handful all over her fine silk gown and up to her cheek.  Ladon lets her go, and she scrambles away. “You’re both going to the gallows for this!” She shrieks.  She’s probably right, but Ladon and I both giggle at the sight anyway.  This is my chance. “Cause a distraction,” I whisper.  He nods, flashing a little smirk my way. He runs into the stables as I wait for my guard to return, and soon enough I see countless horses running through the courtyard.  The blacksmith drops his work with a clatter and begins chasing after the horses, along with the other nearby guards. Amidst the chaos, I stay calm. I slink over to the blacksmith’s workshop, wiping my filthy hands on my dress as I go.  As quickly as I can, I find the little tool and tuck it under the bodice of my skirt. The blade is rubbing against my skin, and I can feel droplets of warm blood as it cuts into my flesh.  But it’ll be worth it, I laugh in amusement as I watch the courtyard erupt into anarchy. For a moment I contemplate grabbing one of the horses and escaping right now, but I wouldn’t make it far before they track me down. No. I’ll run in the dead of night, when I can put as much distance as possible between myself and this god-forsaken place before they realize I’m gone. I walk over to my guard, still wearing my sweet smile. He’s still wiping the remnants of poop from his face. He scowls at me and raises a fist to strike me across the face, but I lift my hand to stop him. “You don’t want to do that,” I say firmly. “Yes I do,” he growls. “Ah,” I nod, “So you want to tell Merlin that lowly little Drusilla got the better of you? That you left me alone? That I caused all of this under your watch? You’ll end up in the gallows too.” He chews on his lip thoughtfully and his fuzzy eyebrows knit together in a frown. “Fine,” he mutters. “Let’s get you back to the tower.” He grabs my arm with his enormous, meaty hand and forcibly drags me through the mass of flying bodies and dirt. Nearby, I see Ladon leaning against a wall with his arms folded, watching me intently. “Thank you,” I mouth to him silently. He gives me a little wink, then disappears into the cloud of dust.
