The Father

1900 Words

The strange man swims toward me, his blond locks floating in the sea water like a golden halo around his face. I’m surprised to see that he doesn’t have a tail, like I’d assumed. I mean… that’s what I thought I’d heard. But he has legs and long, webbed feet, and his skin is littered with patches of scales. There are twitching gills on either side of his neck. As he approaches, my whole body freezes up. I don’t know if it’s because I’m breathing water for the first time in my life, or the fact that I’m face to face with my real father who is a f*****g sea witch… but I can’t seem to form any words.  He gets closer to my face, studying my features closely. “It’s impossible,” he mutters under his breath. “Well, you kids have fun,” chirps the siren, “But I have more important things to do.”
