89 The field on the edge of the wood was fast turning into a quagmire. Standing rainwater pooled deep, submerging Alice's sneakers. She saw Brooke's parents fleeing the scene. Marlene too, slipping and sliding as they went. All around her, it was chaos. Bodies strewn on the ground. Costumes and masks discarded. Torches smoking in the mud. The table left behind, and Kilbride behind the wheel of the pickup. The headlights came on as he fired up the engine. He reversed through a slush of mud, spraying waves of water either side.
