30 Alice and Ray kissed in his attic bedroom, with its wooden-beam ceiling and cream wallpaper. A single lamp lit the room, an unmade double bed against one wall and a flatscreen TV fixed on the other. Alice pushed Ray toward the bed. She loosened the brown leather belt around his waist and ripped it clear of its loops. She tossed it aside and undid the fly on his combats. Ray dropped onto the bed and kicked off his weathered pair of black boots. Alice stepped back and tried to remove her cardigan. It was a slim fit and wouldn't come off easy. She couldn't undo the buttons either, so she wrestled it over her head. Hair static-wild, she fiddled with the straps on her shoes, bursting into giggles.
