Alice caught a glimpse of her pale reflection in the wing mirror of Ray's pickup. Her hair a mess underneath the cap. She tucked a few loose strands behind her ears and fiddled with the ponytail. Aside from the rumble of the tires and the hum of the engine, the silence was deafening.
"This is the first time I've seen you since—“ Ray stopped short of mentioning the obvious event.
Alice wasn't about to fill in the blanks. "Yeah," she said.
Ray shook his head. "Man."
Alice shot him a look. "You're not gonna cry are you?"
Ray laughed. "I might."
As the tension broke, Ray slowed the truck at a stop sign. He steered out into the main highway. ”So how long have you been a raven?"
"Huh? I'm a Steelers girl now."
"Not the Ravens, you douche." Ray pointed to his head. "The dark hair.”
