Grave Digger

553 Words
The sound of her shovel digging into the dirt was almost soothing to Roan. It was the only sound besides the dying blaze. She didn’t dare glance at the four neath bundles only a few yards away. She didn’t have anything left to throw up but she had learned right after bundling the smallest one, her stomach really didn’t care. Roan took a few shaky breaths and wiped the sweat from her brow. It had taken her all of sun up to dig these four holes and this was the last ing . She squinted at the dying light of the sun and heaved a sigh. She couldn’t bury everyone but she will damn well bury her family. It was the least she could do. Roan was just thankful to have found a semi decent shovel. This one was heat warped but still functioning. She tossed the shovel aside and ran a hand through her long hair then turned back to the bundles. She bute back a wave of sickness. Roan is still getting use to the idea they were gone. It was like any minute they would get up again and start asking about her hunt. She sighed gain and slowly grabbed the biggest bundle. With a white knuckle grip she slowly dragged it to the hole. It went in with a soft thud making her feel sick again. “Goodbye Papa” she says with a scratchy voice before pushing dirt over the remains. Once covered she moved on to the next one. Her mother was only a little easier to move. She had been a very slim woman with the brightest smile. “Watch over him Mama.” Roan says as she buries her too. The two smallest bundles were the hardest. The tiniest one she took to rocking back and forth and sobbing her heart out. Her little tiny baby sister the one her and her little brother had waited so long for was gone just after coming into the world Roan placed the bundle ever so gently in the ground and pushed dirt over her too. With a long sniffle she looked over the four mounds and sank to her knees. She threw her hands to the ground and dung her fingers into the soil leftover from the makeshift graves. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there.” Roan said with a choked sob. “I promise with my very last breath they will pay for this” she says with a growl as her animal comes to the surface. The only thing keeping her together was the feeling of the dirt gripped in her hands. It kept her grounded to the here and now. Roan took a few shaky breaths to bring herself back from the absolute rage in her mind. She sat back up on her knees and gave a weak smile to the graves with tears in her eyes “well who knew I would outlive you all huh?” She says a cruel laugh bubbling in her throat. Roan got a grip on herself and stood up, turned and walked to where her sword was on the dirt. “Goodbye, I hope to see you again. Not soon but one day” she says, picking up the sword and walking away without a glance back.
