Village Camp

There was a bowl just below her nose. Her groggy brain thought it was floating there like some kind of dream for a second until she noticed the glove and looked up to a smug looking Kai. “Eat up kiddo, you need all the nutrients to grow up.” Kai says with a teasing tone. Roan cast a skeptical look at the bowl with a frown on her face. “I'm not a kid.” Roan grumbled sleep etched in her voice a yawn catching in her throat. She slowly took the bowl it was warm in her hands. “How can I know this isn't poisoned?” She says arching an eyebrow. Kai barked a laugh, her head thrown back. “ Man, I thought kids like you are always so trusting .” Kai says with a chuckle as Roan glared at her. “It's a waste of perfectly good food to poison you. If I wanted you dead..” Kai pulled out a small knife causing Roan to flinch back at the quick movement. Kai looked down at the sharp object with a cold smile. She then started to clean under her nails. “Fair.” Roan muttered softly, eyeing the knife in the mercenary's hand, she turned away a little bringing the bowl to her lips, taking a sip slowly. Kai put the knife away grinning at her then turned to walk away. “Try to get some sleep. We wake up early around here. I would like to hear more about these dragons and what really happened at that village.” Kai says, casting a look back at her. “I wouldn't try running, we will find you and kill you assuming you were lying.” Kai says in such a cold tone that Roane could feel the chill through her bones despite the warm fire and soup making its way down her throat. A sick feeling bubbled up. She knew the older woman would do it too without a second thought.. “Understood” She says softly looking away fear pooling in her gut. Roan wondered what would happen if they didn't believe what she said. She briefly considered trying to run, but who knew how long she could outrun the group around her. A few were already watching her with sharp curious eyes. She had a way better chance trying to convince them of the truth then running and letting them believe a lie. Roan watches Kai cross to the other side of the fire where her own bowl is on the ground. The mercenary sat down scooping up the bowl carefully taking a sip as she sat. Their eyes meet across the fire locking for a moment. They reached an understanding in that moment and looked away from each other. They both understood that this fragile trust was easily broken on both sides. Roan had to trust kai wouldn't slit her throat in her sleep and Kai had to trust she wouldn't bolt. A heavy object falling on her head jolted her out of her thoughts. She pulled the blanket over her head and looked around puzzled to see Luan not meeting her eyes as he dusted his hands in the air.
