Chapter 5            The sound of the phone ringing startled her. Anabel wasn’t sure she wanted to pick it up, but she did. “Uh hello?” she whispered.            “Anabel? It’s Mike, I made it to Dallas.” He said sounding worried.            “Oh hey, yeah I just um woke up.” She said darting her eyes around the room, the sofa moved under her as she adjusted her body.            Mike cleared his throat, “Oh okay, well I’m going to take a shower and then go to bed. Tomorrow’s meeting will tell me how long I’ll have to stay here.” He complained.            “Alright, I love you, bye,” Anabel said before he could finish his rant, she wasn’t up for hearing his complaints. Standing up, Anabel decided to take a shower, and order some take out and then she’d go to bed. She didn’t have to work for the rest of the week, so she wanted to catch up on some rest.            Anabel waited for the take-out to come, she made herself another drink. It felt good to have something cold and smooth. A knock at the door startled her; she put down the glass and grabbed the money for her food. Opening the door a man stood there, he wore dark clothes and a hat that covered his head.            “Um?” she said. “Can I help you?” she said surprised, her heart raced. She said remembering her dream. Only this time there is only one person. She hoped she was safe.            “Are you Anabel Knight?” he spoke in a deep voice.            Anabel took a deep breath, she wasn’t sure if she could close the door before he stopped her, she wasn’t sure if she should answer his question. “I might be, why?” she growled.            He looked around, and then back at her. His eyes met hers for a moment before she looked away. “Because your life is in danger.” He said. “May I come in?”            “No!” she growled. “My life isn’t in danger, who are you? Who do you think you are telling someone their life is in danger? If only you knew what I’ve been through.” She said. Her body trembled to know this was real.            “Please.” He said taking off his hat, so she could see he had silver eyes but no black in them. “You are a lost soul that was forced to come back as a mortal. But-“            She put her hand up. “Please go away.” She said slamming the door in his face. Bolting the door, she leaned against it. Tears streamed down her face.            “Please Ms. Knight, you have to trust me.” He continued. “I know you are scared, and you just want your life back to normal. You were going to have your peace, but the Gate of Redemption was attacked and you fell through the floor. We’re not even sure how you made it back to your body without actually going through the gate.” He said putting his hand against the door. He wanted her to know he wasn’t going to hurt her.            “No that was just a dream.” She said still sobbing against the door. “All of it was a dream, now please go away.” She felt sick; she wanted to go back to before the accident. At least then she knew her life, she felt like her life was changing, and she was afraid.            “I cannot, you have a new destiny, and I am here to see you make it until the end.” He said tapping on the door. “You know deep down, I can get into your apartment with magic, but it will cause a scene and it’ll be something that starts a whole new issue.”            Unlocking the door and opening it a little. “Why should I believe you?” She said locking her eyes to his.            “You don’t have to, but know things will start to happen, and you’ll be faced with some seriously bad entities.” He said putting his hat on. “You still have time, so I can visit again to give you time to learn from your dreams.” He said taking a step back. “My name is John.” He then disappeared before her eyes.            Anabel blinked, her head darting back and forth looking for him, but he was gone. Her take-out arrived just in time for the guy to kind of see what happened, but he didn’t question Anabel. She paid for her meal, closing the door “Something isn’t right here.” She said sitting down.            “So have you made a decision?” John said coming into the living room from the kitchen. “Nice place. You need more color though.” He said glancing at the walls.            Anabel jumped up, spilling her food on the floor. “Great.” She said cleaning it up, not worrying about the stranger in her living room.            “I told you I can get in here.” He said helping her clean up the mess.            Anabel tossed the food in the trash, walking back into the living room. “How did you get in here?” she said looking into the kitchen. She ate what didn’t fall out of the bag and onto the floor.            “Magic.” He said sitting in the love chair in the corner. “So I know you have to have questions for me?”            “No, not really.” She said sitting on the couch. “I just want to forget about what I saw, if I even saw it?” She said shaking her head. “That wasn’t even real.” She said challenging him.            John took a drink of hers from earlier. “Well, you did see me disappear in the hallway, and I just appeared in your kitchen. So how do you explain that?” he said taking a bite from the apple he snagged from the kitchen.            “I uh, I don’t know. You had to drug me and snuck past me or something.” She said shaking her head.            “Right,” he said standing up. “So no questions even if you think it’s crazy?” he half smiled at her.            “So what does this have to do with me? Why is it you are so interested in me?” she said making herself a drink and taking a sip. “I am just an average girl, I haven’t done anything with my life, and in fact, I hate my life.”            “You’re not supposed to be here now, you died. That can cause a lot of problems for Heaven and Hell. You know the end of times kind of stuff.” He said sitting next to her.            “So what if I want to see this world perish, what if it’s for the best?” she said moving away from him. “I don’t believe at the end of times, it is just something people get suckered into believing, I’m not one of those people.”            “Ms. Knight you do not understand, Earth is a life essence for a lot of other things. Humans were supposed to be a seed of growth and understanding; it turned into a complete disaster.” He said shaking his head.            Anabel walked over to the sliding glass door. “What do you mean we are a complete disaster?” she said looking back at him.            “It’s hard to explain, there were not supposed to be this many people here, also the violence wasn’t supposed to be in your gene pool.” He said. “Basically what we were supposed to do was move some humans to another world, but it failed.”            “I’m not understanding this, are you talking science?” she said.            “Not exactly, you see we use portals to transport upon your world, among other worlds. Realms if you want to call them anything.” He said walking towards her. “And no this is not a fantasy movie or a punk as you mortals like to call it.”            As the two stood there staring at each other, an explosion hit the side of the building shattering Anabel’s sliding glass door. Anabel landed on her side, she winced in pain. John quickly got to his feet, trying to help Anabel to her feet.            “What, what’s going on?” Anabel cried, looking at the shattered glass that littered her living room.  “I don’t know, this is what I was trying to warn you about. Demons are after you, you are one of the keys that Heaven needs to complete its mission on earth.” John said trying to pull Anabel to her feet, but she didn’t move.            “John, oh John come out and play!” someone yelled.            Smoke filled the apartment, Anabel struggled to breathe. “Who, who is that?” she whined, struggling to see anything.            “Dremis, he’s the head of the Demon squad that lives on Earth,” John said. “He can take anyone’s soul and torture it until it’s the soul’s time to die,” John said shaking his head, trying to clear some smoke so he could get her safely out of there.            Anabel shook her head; she didn’t believe anything John was telling her. She didn’t want it to be real. She’d never seen a demon; she thought they were just something people made up to scare kids into behaving. “So, he can only take those souls that are stuck here?” she said. “Like me?”       “Yes like you, you are lost. An unmarked, unclaimed soul.” He said as another explosion happened. “Come on we have to get out here before he kills us.” John grabbed onto Anabel disappearing from her apartment.
