Chapter 4 Humiliation

685 Words
With Adrian backing her up, the nurse regained her confidence. Without giving Nia a chance to speak, she grabbed her arm and dragged her away. Nia was forced into a chair. The nurse tossed the medical record book in front of her and then locked the door. "Hurry up and write," the nurse said. "I'll be back to check. If you're not done by then, you know what will happen." Nia didn't need to guess where she had gone. The nurse had probably gone to dinner. This kind of thing had happened many times before. Even though she had just finished surgery and felt exhausted and hungry, Nia had no choice but to finish writing the records. About half an hour later, the nurse finally returned and began checking the chart. Nia walked toward the door, but another doctor, Lina Voss, stopped her. "Hey, Nia. Help me clean the department." Nia glanced out the window. It was already completely dark. She frowned. "But cleaning the department is your responsibility. Why should I do it?" Lina looked completely unconcerned. "Haven't you helped with this kind of thing plenty of times already? The hospital even let you stay. You should be grateful. I want you to clean today, and you're not leaving until you do." Lina suddenly laughed and stepped closer. "I heard that people in prison follow strict routines. You stayed there for so long, you must be very good at cleaning. Maybe not just rooms either. Maybe you're also good at cleaning inside a man's pants. Otherwise, how could you stay in prison for two years without a scratch? When you were pestering Dr. Locke back then, did he ever feel disgusted by you?" The words felt like someone had slammed Nia to the ground and stomped on her heart. Pain spread through her chest and made her tremble. Her eyes reddened, but she forced herself to look straight at Lina. "Lina, I've never offended you. Why do you always target me like this? I won't help you. I'm about to resign. I won't belong to this hospital anymore." Lina rolled her eyes. "In this line of work, who doesn't talk about quitting every few days? If you're capable, go resign first and then talk. As long as you still work here, you do what you're told." With nurse Nora Price standing nearby, Nia was easily blocked at the door again. She couldn't get out, just like in prison, when the cell boss forced her to do things that were never her responsibility. Lina and Nora sat nearby, laughing together as they kept her trapped inside. They watched coldly as Nia began cleaning in silence. She had already spent the whole afternoon performing surgery. Now she had to bend over and scrub the floor. Her body had reached its limit. Dizziness washed over her and she almost fainted. Meanwhile Lina and Nora started gossiping. "Did Dr. Locke take Melody out again?" "Yes, just a couple of days ago. Dr. Locke usually seems cold, but he treats Melody incredibly well. She said she wanted to watch the iron flower show, and he immediately took annual leave. Last time when Melody got sick, he ran to her place in the pouring rain and stayed the entire night taking care of her. He didn't even eat. When I saw her post about it, I was so jealous." "If even you're jealous, imagine how someone else must feel." The two women laughed and fixed their eyes on Nia. Nia pretended not to notice and dragged the mop heavily across the floor. 'A couple of days ago…' While in prison, Nia had developed rheumatism. A few days earlier her leg injury had flared up again. The bone-deep pain had forced her to take several days off. Adrian had said the hospital was busy and that he could not even come home. So, he had been out with Melody. He had even used his annual leave. Suddenly Lina cried out in surprise. "Hey, what's wrong with you? Why are you crying and smiling at the same time? Have you gone crazy?"
