Cold sweat broke out across Nia's back, but her face remained calm.
"Nothing. I just came to ask Evelyn about something."
In truth, most matters handled here were related to job transfers. As an unofficial staff member, the only thing Nia could possibly ask about was resignation.
Adrian did not think much of it. After walking a few steps away, he turned back.
"The patient from yesterday's surgery needs a dressing change. You're free right now, so go do it."
Nia was still thinking about the passport and replied quietly, "I'm not on duty today. Ask someone else."
Adrian frowned and looked at her in confusion.
"Do you think this job was easy for you to get? You can't just take leave whenever you want. Even if you plan to leave, finish the task first. A lot of people have colds lately because of the changing season, and the nurses are overwhelmed. Besides, that patient is under my care. Shouldn't you help change the dressing?"
Adrian did not ask why Nia had come to see Evelyn Harper, and he did not ask why she was not working. The only thing he cared about was whether Nia would keep working like a beast for the hospital.
Was this really what love looked like?
Nia took a deep breath and clenched her fists.
"Adrian, I'm leaving…"
Before she could finish, Melody's voice interrupted from the hallway.
"Adrian! So, you're here. One of my patients has been on medication for three days with no improvement. Could you take a look?"
She jogged over and wrapped her arm around Adrian's.
Adrian gently moved her hand away, but his expression softened.
"You were always the most absent minded one when we were in school. After working for years, you still can't handle things on your own. What am I supposed to do with you?"
Melody puffed out her cheeks and acted spoiled.
"But I have you, don't I? Or are you tired of me and don't want to help anymore?"
Adrian reached out and affectionately patted her head.
"Of course not."
Watching them, Nia suddenly remembered their internship days.
There had been a medical case she did not know how to write, so she asked Adrian for help. Back then, he only glanced at it briefly and said he did not know either.
At the time, she had foolishly believed he was simply cold to everyone. Perhaps the truth was that she had never mattered to him at all.
After finishing the dressing change, Nia walked toward the hospital entrance, only to be stopped.
Two nurses blocked her path. Their names were Clara Bennett and Ryan Foster.
They were close to Melody and had always enjoyed picking on Nia.
The two dragged her into a corner and demanded aggressively, "Nia, you've got some nerve. Still chasing after Dr. Locke?"
It took Nia a moment to realize they were talking about what had happened earlier near Evelyn's office, when Adrian asked her to change the dressing.
She shook her head and said sincerely, "I'm not. From now on, I won't even speak to him."
Clara and Ryan exchanged a glance, clearly unconvinced.
"Sure. You're probably just saying that. Tomorrow you'll be delivering lunch to him again."
"You're really disgusting. Do you know that Dr. Locke never eats the lunches you bring? He throws them away."
"Exactly. You've even been to prison. Do you really think you're worthy of Dr. Locke? He was just kind enough not to drive you out. Yet you keep hovering around him all day. Have some shame."
Nia's face turned pale as she tried to defend herself.
"That's not true. Adrian and I have been together since college. I wasn't chasing him."
The two burst out laughing, then looked at her with disgust.
"Do you have some kind of delusion? Dr. Locke and Melody have been together for three years. When exactly were you with him?"
"Yeah. They're happily together, and you still push yourself in the middle, bringing those ridiculous love lunches. It's pathetic. If you hadn't taken the fall for Dr. Locke back then, do you really think the hospital would have kept someone with your record?"
Nia's heart tightened painfully. She looked at them in confusion.
"Taken the fall? What do you mean?"
This was the first time Nia had looked so fragile after their insults. Clara and Ryan were already excited, and the words spilled out before they could stop themselves.
"You seriously don't know? Hahaha! Back then Dr. Locke realized you liked him, so he deliberately asked you to take the blame for him. And you, i***t that you are, actually agreed the moment he asked."
A loud buzzing filled Nia's ears. The fragile thread that had been stretched tight in her mind finally snapped.
