Nia rushed forward and grabbed their clothes.
"You're lying to me, right?"
"That's not the truth, is it?"
The commotion drew a few curious looks. Clara and Ryan suddenly realized they had said too much, and panic flashed across their faces.
They shoved Nia hard, sending her crashing to the ground. Her palms scraped against the floor, burning with pain.
"Are you crazy? We didn't say anything. If you're stupid, don't blame it on us."
Clara stepped back nervously and even brushed off her sleeves as if she were afraid of touching something filthy.
"You must have lost your mind in prison. Just get out of the hospital already."
Nia collapsed on the ground, laughing and crying at the same time. The sight was so unsettling that the two of them hurried away.
Three years ago, she and Adrian had been deeply in love. If Melody and Adrian had already been together back then, what did that make her?
And the two years she spent in prison for Adrian, what did that count for?
Nia slowly pushed herself up from the ground and stumbled toward city hall.
At that moment, only one thought filled her mind. She had to leave this place as soon as possible.
After finishing the passport application, Nia rushed back to Adrian's house.
Originally, she had planned to pack up all the things they had exchanged and send them to him later. But now it was obvious he did not need any of it. So, she burned them all.
Then she called a renovation company and told them she planned to redo the house. Some of the fixed installations needed to be removed, and they could come in three days.
Just then the door opened.
Adrian looked around at the suddenly empty house, and a strange sense of unease rose in his chest.
"Why didn't you go to work?"
Nia could not even force a bitter smile.
A few days ago Melody had casually mentioned that frequent handwashing had made her hands dry, and Adrian had immediately bought her an expensive hand cream.
Yesterday Nia had clearly told him she would never return to the hospital again. Yet he did not remember.
But Nia no longer had the energy to explain anything. She did not even want to speak another word to him.
"I had something to do."
Adrian did not think much of it. He went to the bedroom, took what he needed, and prepared to leave.
As he passed the entrance, he noticed the photo frame was empty. The unease in his chest surged again.
"Where's the photo from the frame? Why is it gone?"
Nia glanced at it once and looked away.
"I'm replacing the frame, so I took the photo out."
Adrian was about to ask where the photo was when his phone suddenly rang.
He answered it. His expression softened immediately, and without another word he turned and left.
After dealing with the last of those useless things, Nia also prepared to leave.
Jasper had just called to say the person coming to pick her up would arrive soon.
Before leaving, Nia wanted to visit the cemetery and spend a little time with her parents. After all, it might be a long time before she ever came back here again.
She wiped the dust from their tombstones, then sat beside them and spoke softly for a while, as if they could hear her.
That was when Adrian's call came.
Nia hung up.
The phone rang again.
She hung up again.
It rang once more.
In the end, she answered. But the voice on the other end was not Adrian's. It was Melody, sounding frantic.
"Nia, where are you? Come back to the hospital right now. Something's happened."
Nia was not surprised that Melody was using Adrian's phone. They had been a loving couple for years. Of course they would use each other's phones.
For the first time, she could not help complaining.
"I'm just a caregiver. What problem could I possibly solve?"
Melody cut her off immediately.
"Just come back. You're the only one who can handle this. Nia, I'm begging you. If you don't come back, something terrible will happen."
Nia had no idea what was going on, but Melody sounded genuinely desperate. So, she took a taxi back to the hospital.
But the moment the elevator doors opened, she heard the noisy chaos from the nurses' station.
It sounded like someone was making trouble.
