Chapter 9 Standing Alone

538 Words
The two family members, seeing everyone point the blame at Nia, grew bolder. They swung their fists and advanced toward her. Desperate, Nia closed her eyes. She knew she had once again been pushed forward by Adrian to take the fall. She was furious. She was unwilling. She regretted it. Why had she ever fallen for a man like him? But the fists never landed. A group of bodyguards in black suits, straight out of a movie, rushed down the stairs and formed a protective circle around Nia. The onlookers froze, shocked by the sudden show of force. Silence fell over the crowd. Only the two family members still tried to move, shouting threats. "You think calling for help will save you? I'm telling you, murder carries a price—we'll pursue this to the end! You don't even check who you're dealing with. Do you think a junior doctor like you can take me on?!" Nia's face went pale, and she couldn't say a word. One of the bodyguards helped her to her feet and immediately called the big boss. The line connected instantly, and the voice on the other end asked about Nia's safety with urgency. The bodyguard let Nia report she was unharmed, then quickly explained what had just happened. Within two minutes, the phone on the wealthy lady's side rang. After the call, her expression shifted dramatically, from respect to shock, and finally to pure fear as she looked at Nia. She had no idea that the person she had accidentally provoked had such a powerful backing. After she hung up, the woman's legs gave way, and she almost fell to her knees in front of Nia. "Miss Hawthorne… I… I didn't recognize someone so important and offended you. Please, I beg you, don't hold it against me." The drastic change in her attitude left everyone present confused. Several people who usually disliked Nia whispered among themselves. Finally, Ryan Foster mustered the courage to speak. "She was the one at fault. Why are you suddenly apologizing to her?" The woman glared at Ryan, then pulled the man beside her into a bow toward Nia. Although Nia knew Jasper was powerful, she didn't realize he could resolve this without even making a direct call. Adrian, on the other hand, when faced with the same situation, had only thought to push her forward to take the blame. Nia felt utterly exhausted. She had no energy to argue here. Weakly, she asked the bodyguards to take her away. Suddenly, someone grabbed her wrist. Adrian was behind her, voice urgent. "What's going on? Who are these bodyguards?" Nia frowned. "It's none of your business who they are. And you hurt me." Hearing this, the bodyguard immediately cuffed Adrian's hands behind his back, while the rest respectfully escorted Nia to leave. Adrian, however, shouted relentlessly from behind. "Nia, what do you mean? What kind of connections did you make in those two years in prison? You despise me now, and you're abandoning me? If you leave, never come back!" Nia paused. Her eyes stung, uncontrollably swelling with tears. She trembled as she looked at Adrian and forced a bitter smile. "Fine. As you wish. I won't ever come back."
