Chapter 1 Alex stared out the window, watching the sunset behind the bustling cityscape. A job offer from a prestigious company in New York had just landed in their inbox. It was a dream come true, but it meant leaving Maddie, their best friend since childhood. Maddie burst into the room, tickets to a concert in hand. "Hey, guess what?" she exclaimed. Alex forced a smile, unsure how to break the news. As they walked to the concert, Alex hesitated, wondering when to reveal their secret. Maddie noticed Alex's distant expression and asked what was wrong. Alex took a deep breath and blurted out the truth: "I got a job offer... in New York." Maddie's face fell, her eyes widening in shock. The noise of the concert faded into the background as Maddie's gaze locked onto Alex's. "You're leaving?" she whispered, her voice trembling. Alex nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. Maddie's eyes welled up with tears. She looked like she'd been punched in the gut. Alex felt a wave of regret wash over them. Had they made a mistake by considering the job offer? As the reality of the situation sunk in, Maddie's face crumpled. She turned away, trying to compose herself. Alex felt a pang of guilt and regret. They had never been apart from Maddie before. What would it be like to live in a different city, without their best friend by their side? Alex reached out and put a hand on Maddie's shoulder. "Hey, I'm sorry," they said, trying to sound reassuring. "I know this is a lot to take in." Maddie turned back to Alex, her eyes red-rimmed from tears. "How could you do this to me?" she asked, her voice shaking. "We're supposed to be a team, Alex. We're supposed to face everything together." Alex felt a surge of emotions: guilt, regret, and a deep sadness. They knew that Maddie was right. They had always been a team, and the thought of being apart was unbearable. "I know, Mads," Alex said, trying to sound calm. "And I'm sorry. But this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I have to consider it." Maddie's face fell, and she looked away. Alex knew that they had hurt their best friend, and it felt like a knife to the heart. As they stood there in silence, the sound of the concert drifted back into focus. The music was loud and cheerful, but Alex couldn't shake off the feeling of sadness that had settled over them. They knew that they had a difficult decision to make. Should they take the job and risk losing their best friend, or should they stay and potentially miss out on an amazing opportunity?
