“She’s changing, Luka,” Kieran said, his voice low and tense.
They stood in the dusty old library again. The room smelled of old leather and firewood. Books and scrolls were piled high on the table between them.
Kieran slammed a book shut. “Every sign is there. The healing, the senses, the dreams—she’s not just human. She’s something else.”
Luka folded his arms. “So you really think she’s a latent shifter?”
Kieran nodded. “It’s the only thing that makes sense.”
He picked up an ancient scroll, unrolling it carefully. The paper was old and yellow. Faded ink showed drawings of wolves with golden eyes and strange symbols.
“The blood of wolves can sleep for generations,” Kieran read aloud. “Hidden in humans. But when the time is right—when the soul meets its true mate—it wakes.”
Luka’s eyes narrowed. “You think the bond with you is waking her up?”
Kieran’s jaw clenched. “I don’t just think it. I feel it.”
He looked away for a second, then whispered, “When I touched her that night, something inside me snapped. My wolf recognized her. But now... she’s suffering. The change is hurting her.”
“Then what do we do?” Luka asked.
“We protect her,” Kieran said firmly. “No one can know. Not yet.”
---
Elena sat on the edge of the bed, her hands shaking. Her eyes still glowed faintly gold in the mirror. She had washed her face, tied her hair up, tried to look normal.
But nothing felt normal anymore.
Her heart beat too fast. Her hearing was too sharp. She could hear footsteps outside. The wind in the trees, even the breathing of wolves in the distance.
She heard someone knock.
“Elena?”
It was Kieran’s voice.
She stood slowly and opened the door.
He looked tired. His eyes were shadowed, but gentle.
“Can I come in?” he asked.
She nodded.
He stepped inside and closed the door behind him. For a long moment, he just looked at her.
“Elena... I found something.”
She turned to him, her throat dry. “What’s happening to me, Kieran?”
He sat beside her. “You’re not just human. You may be something called a latent shifter.”
“What does that mean?” she asked.
“It means someone in your bloodline was a werewolf,” he said softly. “Maybe long ago. That part of you stayed hidden... until now.”
Elena blinked. “And now it’s waking up?”
He nodded. “Because of the bond between us.”
She looked down. “But I didn’t choose this. I never asked for it.”
“I know,” he said. “But it’s part of you. And we’ll face it together.”
Her eyes met his, wide and scared. “Am I turning into a monster?”
Kieran reached out, holding her hand gently. “No. You’re becoming something strong. Something rare.”
She didn’t pull away.
But outside the door, someone listened quietly.
Selene.
---
Selene stood in the shadows, her hands curled into fists. Her breath came fast.
So it was true.
Elena was a latent shifter. She wasn’t just some random human. She was becoming one of them.
Selene’s heart burned with rage.
She had waited her whole life to be Luna. To be by Kieran’s side. She had obeyed her father, smiled at the council, played her part like a perfect daughter.
And now, this girl—this nobody—was going to take it all?
No.
She wouldn’t allow it.
Selene turned and walked quickly toward the council chambers. She had a plan. And she was ready to use it.
---
Later that night, Elena sat alone, staring at her hands. They looked the same—almost. But she could feel the power beneath her skin. Like something was crawling just under the surface.
She touched her chest, right over her heart. It beat in time with something else.
She heard footsteps outside and looked up.
Selene stood in the doorway.
“What do you want?” Elena asked.
Selene walked in slowly, her heels clicking softly on the wood.
“We need to talk,” she said.
Elena stood, tense. “About what?”
Selene’s smile was sharp. “About what you really are.”
Elena’s mouth went dry. “You don’t know anything.”
“Oh, I know everything,” Selene whispered. “I saw the claw marks. I felt the shift in your scent. And I’ve seen your eyes.”
Elena took a step back. “Stay away from me.”
“You’re a problem,” Selene said, stepping closer. “A big one. You think Kieran will choose you over peace? Over the alliance with my father? He won’t.”
Elena’s chest rose and fell quickly. “You don’t know him.”
“I know him better than you ever will,” Selene snapped. “He’s strong, but he has one weakness—duty. And you... you are a threat to that duty.”
Elena clenched her fists. “I didn’t ask for this bond.”
“But you accepted it,” Selene said coldly. “You think you belong here. That you can take my place. But I won’t let that happen.”
Elena stood tall, even though her knees were shaking. “So what are you going to do? Kill me?”
“No,” Selene said. “I’m going to give Kieran a choice. Either he rejects you, or I tell the council what you are. And once they know? They’ll tear you apart.”
She smiled. “You’re not a wolf yet, Elena. You won’t survive.”
Then she turned and walked away, her hair swaying.
Elena dropped to the floor the moment she was gone. Her hands trembled. Her eyes stung.
Kieran… what would he do?
---
Kieran stood at the edge of the forest, looking up at the moon. His wolf was restless tonight. It paced in his mind, growling softly.
He turned when he heard Luka approach.
“What is it?” he asked.
Luka looked serious. “Selene went to the council house. She was whispering with one of the elders.”
Kieran’s eyes turned dark. “She knows.”
Luka nodded. “And she’s going to tell them.”
Kieran looked out at the trees. “Then I have to stop her.”
---
Later that night, Kieran walked into Elena’s house. She was sitting on the couch, hugging a blanket.
When she saw him, she jumped up. “She came. Selene. She knows. She said—”
“I know,” he said, walking to her. “Luka told me.”
“She said I have to leave. Or she’ll tell everyone.”
Kieran took her face in his hands. “Listen to me. You’re not leaving. You’re mine, Elena. Mate or not, I’ll protect you.”
Tears filled her eyes. “But the council—”
“I’ll deal with them.”
He kissed her forehead gently. “No one is taking you from me.”
Elena closed her eyes and leaned into him.
But outside the door, voices shouted.
The front door burst open.
It was Luka.
His face was pale. “Kieran! She did it. Selene told the elders. They know.”
Kieran’s face went cold.
Elena gasped. “What happens now?”
Luka looked between them.
“They’re coming here.”
The council knows the truth about Elena. She’s no longer just a secret—she’s now a threat, and the pack is coming.
