I Can’t Let You Go

1154 Words
“You have to reject her, Kieran.” The council’s voice echoed across the hall. The large stone room was filled with angry murmurs. The elders sat in their robes, their faces stern and cold. “She’s human—dangerous,” Elder Mora snapped. “And she’s turning. That makes her a threat to the truce.” Kieran stood at the center of the circle, fists clenched. “She’s not a threat,” he said calmly. “She’s just changing. She didn’t choose this.” “You’re the Alpha!” another elder barked. “If you don’t reject her, the alliance with the Roths is broken. The war will return.” Victor Roth sat quietly at the side, arms folded, watching everything. Selene stood behind him with a proud smile. Her plan had worked. Kieran looked around the room. So many eyes. So much pressure. But his heart was back in that small room, with Elena. She was the one thing that felt real. He turned to the council. His jaw tightened. “I will speak to her,” he said. --- Back in the pack house, Elena sat near the window. Her hands shook as she held a cup of tea she couldn’t drink. She hadn’t slept. Her whole body felt strange—alive and raw. Her senses buzzed, her skin burned. The front door opened. Kieran walked in. Elena stood quickly. “What happened?” Kieran didn’t speak right away. His eyes were heavy. Something in him looked broken. He walked up to her slowly. “I have to do something,” he said. “And I need you to trust me.” “What is it?” she asked. He swallowed hard. “I have to reject you. In front of them. It’s the only way to protect you.” Elena’s heart dropped. “Reject me?” “It’s just for show,” he said quickly. “I need to calm the council. If I don’t, they’ll tear you apart.” Tears filled her eyes. “You’re going to pretend I mean nothing to you?” Kieran reached out and held her face gently. “You mean everything to me. But right now, they need to believe I chose the pack. Not you.” Elena looked into his eyes. “But it will hurt. The bond…” “I know,” he whispered. “I’ll take the pain. All of it. You just have to stay hidden, just for a while.” Her voice cracked. “I can’t lose you.” “You won’t,” he said, brushing her hair back. “I love you.” She gasped softly. He’d never said that before. But it was real. He leaned down and kissed her—deep and slow, like he was saying goodbye. And then he was gone. --- The next morning, the pack gathered. A large fire burned in the center. Kieran stood tall in front of the crowd. “I, Kieran Blackwood, Alpha of the Blackwood Pack,” he said loudly, “reject Elena Carter as my mate.” Gasps rippled through the wolves. Selene smiled. Victor gave a slight nod. Behind the trees, hidden in the shadows, Elena watched from a distance. The pain hit her like fire in her chest. Her knees buckled. Her wolf howled inside her mind, crying in confusion. But she stayed silent. She understood. She would wait for him. --- That night, the pack slept. The forest was quiet again. But Kieran wasn’t asleep. He stood outside Elena’s window. She opened the door, her eyes red from crying. They didn’t speak. He just pulled her into his arms and held her tightly. “I couldn’t leave you like that,” he said. He carried her inside, gently placing her on the bed. “I still feel the bond,” she whispered. “So do I,” he said. “It didn’t break.” That night, they gave in to the pull between them. They made love slowly, desperately—like it was the only time they had left. When they finally lay together, skin to skin, heart to heart, the bond sealed fully. Elena’s wolf stirred inside her—soft, awake, and full of power. Kieran’s wolf purred in his chest. They were one now. --- Days passed. Elena stayed hidden in the healer’s cottage. Only Luka and Mira knew she was there. Her senses grew stronger every day. Her eyes sometimes glowed in the dark. Her hearing picked up even whispers. She started dreaming in color—running through forests, hunting with glowing white fur. But something else began. One morning, she woke up feeling dizzy. Her stomach twisted. She ran to the bathroom and threw up. Mira was there in seconds. “Are you sick?” she asked. Elena wiped her mouth, pale and sweating. “I don’t know. I’ve felt tired. Strange.” Mira helped her sit down and touched her wrist, feeling her pulse. Then she leaned close, sniffing. Her eyes went wide. “Elena… when was your last cycle?” Elena blinked. “A few weeks ago, I think. Why?” Mira stood up quickly. “Stay here. I need to check something.” An hour later, Mira returned with a kit. Elena stared at it. “You think I’m…?” Mira gave a soft smile. “Let’s find out.” Minutes later, the test was positive. Elena sat in silence, the world spinning around her. Pregnant. A hybrid child. Kieran’s child. --- Kieran arrived at sunset. Mira met him at the door. “I need to talk to you,” she said. He followed her in. Elena stood by the fireplace, arms crossed over her chest. Her face was pale. She looked at him with wide eyes. “I’m pregnant.” Kieran froze. He didn’t speak for a long time. Then he walked to her slowly and dropped to his knees. He placed his hand gently on her stomach. “I can feel them,” he whispered. Elena looked confused. “Them?” Mira spoke gently. “She’s carrying twins.” Kieran’s eyes widened. Elena blinked. “What does this mean?” Mira looked between them. “It means the child—or children—will be the first hybrid heirs. Stronger than normal wolves. Maybe even stronger than Alphas. If the council finds out…” Kieran stood quickly. “No one can know. Not yet. If Victor hears this—if Selene hears—” Elena grabbed his arm. “What do we do?” He looked into her eyes. “We protect them. No matter what.” But outside the window, in the dark woods… Selene stood, hidden in shadow, her eyes locked on the cottage. She had heard everything. And now, she had a new plan. Selene knows Elena is pregnant with Kieran’s twins—and plans to use it to destroy them both.
